Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Back-end Engineer (Java/Kotlin) based in United Kingdom.

We are looking for an experienced Back-end Engineer to contribute to the development and evolution of scalable SaaS solutions. In this role, you will take ownership of impactful engineering projects, helping shape software architecture and build reliable distributed services and APIs. You will work with modern technologies across the JVM ecosystem, cloud infrastructure, microservices, and event-driven systems. Collaborating closely with engineering teams, product managers, and other stakeholders, you will help deliver high-quality software with a strong focus on performance, availability, and maintainability. This opportunity suits an independent, curious engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, sharing ideas, and contributing to a supportive, multicultural, and flexible remote environment.

Accountabilities

    • Lead and contribute to impactful engineering projects involving the development and continuous improvement of SaaS solutions.

    • Participate in designing, evolving, and improving the overall software architecture to support scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

    • Design, implement, and maintain distributed services, backend systems, and RESTful APIs.

    • Collaborate with engineers across teams and squads, as well as product managers and other stakeholders, to deliver effective technical solutions.

    • Write clean, scalable, high-quality code and contribute to maintaining a robust and sustainable codebase.

    • Develop and maintain comprehensive automated test coverage to ensure software quality and reliability.

    • Improve platform availability and maintainability through architectural enhancements, technology evolution, and continuous optimization.

    • Participate in code reviews, refactoring initiatives, and improvements to integration and delivery processes.

    • Apply agile development practices and contribute to a collaborative, solution-oriented engineering culture.

      • Requirements:

      • At least 5 years of professional experience in backend software engineering.

      • Strong proficiency in Kotlin and practical experience building backend applications with JVM technologies.

      • Experience with other JVM languages, such as Java, Groovy, or Scala, is an advantage.

      • Proven experience designing scalable software systems, ideally within a successful SaaS product environment.

      • Good understanding of containerization, microservices, event-driven architectures, cloud computing, and RESTful APIs.

      • Strong knowledge of several relevant technologies, including:

        • Spring Boot and Hibernate.

        • JUnit and automated testing frameworks.

        • AWS services, including SES and Lambda.

        • Elasticsearch and MySQL.

        • Docker and OpenAPI.

        • Familiarity with agile methodologies and modern software development practices.

        • Additional experience with AWS services such as EC2, RDS, SQS, and SNS is a plus.

        • Knowledge of Terraform is an advantage.

        • Ability to work independently, take ownership, and approach technical challenges with creativity and initiative.

        • Strong collaboration skills and a positive, proactive, and solution-oriented mindset.

        • Advanced written and spoken English proficiency, with the ability to communicate effectively in a remote and largely asynchronous environment.
