Job description

Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, curb management, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
TPM’s Office of Livable Streets (OLS) is seeking to hire a Community Coordinator to serve as a Neighborhood Program Development Coordinator. OLS is tasked with prioritizing strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management. Their goal is to create streets that are livable, supporting safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality citywide. Additionally, they aim to enhance New York City's pedestrian, bicycle, and micromobility networks, providing comfortable, connected, green, and reliable transportation options across the five boroughs. They place special emphasis on Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets. The office also develops innovative new programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet the demands of a rapidly changing population with evolving needs and technologies.
The coordinator will, in part, be responsible for advancing and managing a Low Traffic Neighborhood (LTN) program including developing design typologies that enhance safety, encourage mode-shift, support local traffic and delivery access, and promote livability for pedestrians and cyclists at a neighborhood scale. The candidate will work closely with colleagues throughout TPM units to plan, design, and implement LTN projects and to overlay LTN typologies into existing neighborhood planning efforts. In addition, the Coordinator will support other neighborhood planning efforts across TPM.
The selected candidate must be able to prepare technical drawings and public facing materials which may include maps, diagrams, and reports to help communicate program objectives and designs to the public, stakeholders, and to elected officials. Additional responsibilities may include project management for consultant-based work, the supervision of interns, communication with press, and grant application and administration. In this role, the Coordinator will represent OLS and the DOT at public meetings and conferences.
