This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced designer with a background in materials handling, mechanical engineering and/or structural steelwork to work on a varied portfolio of bespoke projects.

The successful candidate will be involved throughout the design process, from site surveys and initial General Arrangements through to detailed manufacturing drawings, working closely with engineering, fabrication and project teams to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions.

Ideally, you will have 5+ years' experience in a similar design/draughting environment, with experience of heavy-duty conveyors, chutes, hoppers, silos, pipework, large ductwork, structural steelwork, staircases and platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the engineering team to develop bespoke design solutions for materials handling and structural steelwork projects.
  • Attend customer sites to undertake surveys and gather the information required for design development.
  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D General Arrangement drawings for proposals and project development.
  • Develop GA drawings into detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings for the workshop.
  • Produce designs and fabrication drawings for primary and secondary steelwork, conveyors, storage equipment, tanks, silos, hoppers and chute work.
  • Produce sheet metal developments and DXF files for laser cutting.
  • Work with laser scan data and point clouds to support design and site coordination.
  • Use Navisworks to manage, coordinate and develop models where required.
  • Support tender packages, providing design input to optimise cost, quality and manufacturability.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, quality requirements and project scopes.
  • Understand and interpret structural design calculations and reports.
  • Produce supporting documentation, including drawing registers, material lists and bolt lists.
  • Work with and support apprentices, providing guidance and mentoring where required.
  • Attend client meetings and design reviews when required.
  • Take ownership of your workload, working to deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

The Person

We are looking for an experienced Design Engineer / Design Draughtsperson who can take a project from initial survey through to a complete set of manufacturing drawings.

You will ideally have:

  • Significant experience in a similar engineering design/draughting role.
  • Strong experience within bulk materials handling and/or structural steelwork.
  • Experience designing equipment such as conveyors, chutes, hoppers, silos, tanks, ductwork, access steelwork, staircases and platforms.
  • Strong AutoCAD 2D/3D skills, with the ability to produce detailed manufacturing drawings and 3D layouts/models.
  • Working knowledge of Advance Steel or Tekla; experience with other 3D design software would be advantageous.
  • Experience producing sheet metal developments and DXF files for manufacture.
  • Experience coordinating models and information from clients and third-party suppliers.
  • Experience working with laser scan data and point clouds.
  • Experience using Navisworks for model coordination.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to understand engineering and quality specifications and project scopes.
  • Knowledge of CE regulations.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, use initiative and perform effectively under pressure.
  • A practical, hands-on approach with a strong understanding of manufacturing and fabrication.
  • Ideally, an engineering apprenticeship or relevant technical qualification.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK for site surveys.
