Full Stack Mobile App Engineer

Job Specification:

• We are seeking a Full Stack Mobile Engineer to join our mobile app team, reporting to the Lead Developer.
• You will work closely with business stakeholders, product owners and fellow engineers to understand business challenges, shape solutions and deliver high-quality digital products used by thousands of learners and driving instructors across the UK.
• You will take ownership of features from discovery through to production, delivering solutions that create value for both the business and our customers.
• Our mobile products combine Java-based backend services with technologies including Flutter, Sitecore and AWS. Strong experience developing backend services in Java is important for this role, while knowledge and experience with Flutter is desirable. We are also seeking engineers with strong problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgement and the ability to learn quickly. We embrace AI-assisted software development and expect engineers to use these tools responsibly while maintaining high standards of quality, security and maintainability.

Responsibilities:

• Work with business stakeholders and product owners to understand business challenges and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Take ownership of features from discovery through implementation, deployment and production support.
• Design, build and support end-to-end mobile features spanning the mobile client, Java backend services and data integrations.
• Deliver high-quality software that balances customer value, engineering quality and operational stability.
• Collaborate effectively with engineers, testers, designers and business stakeholders.
• Use modern engineering practices and AI-assisted development tools responsibly while maintaining accountability for the quality of delivered solutions.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of products, engineering practices, tooling and your own professional development.
• Help evolve AI-enabled software development practices and ways of working within the team.

• The role requires practical experience developing backend services in Java, including REST APIs and database integrations. Knowledge and experience with Flutter is highly desirable, while exposure to Sitecore and AWS is also advantageous. We value the ability to learn quickly, communicate effectively and deliver high-quality full-stack solutions.

Technical Experience:

• Knowledge and experience with Flutter for cross-platform mobile application development.
• Experience delivering full-stack mobile application features across mobile clients and backend services.
• Strong experience designing, developing and supporting backend services using Java.
• Experience working with headless content management systems.
• Experience designing and developing REST APIs that connect mobile applications to Java backend services.
• Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Experience working with cloud platforms and modern deployment practices.
• Experience writing maintainable, well-tested and secure software.
• Experience using Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Understanding of modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, code review and continuous integration.

Desirable Experience:

Knowledge or experience in any of the following would be advantageous but is not essential:

• AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, CloudFormation or similar.
• SQL Server and database design.
• Automated testing using frameworks such as Jest.
• Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices.
• Experience working within Agile product teams.
• Experience introducing AI-assisted engineering tools or workflows that improve software delivery and team productivity.
