About the role

We’re looking for a hands-on Maintenance Operative to help keep our buildings and grounds safe, clean, secure and running smoothly. You will handle a mix of planned and reactive maintenance in a busy, occupied education environment, supporting staff, students and visitors every day.

What you’ll be doing

Maintenance and repairs:

  • Planned and reactive maintenance across buildings and grounds

  • Spot issues early, log defects, and support contractor coordination for complex works
  • Deliver work to a high standard and within agreed timescales

Health, safety and compliance:

  • Routine health and safety checks and reporting
  • Support fire safety checks, emergency lighting tests, and basic legionella controls (where trained)
  • Follow COSHH, risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Maintain safe working practices and use PPE correctly

Site operations and security:

  • Assist with opening and closing the site, as required
  • Monitor site security and report concerns promptly
  • Support emergency procedures, including evacuations and incident response

Grounds and external areas:

  • Maintain paths, fences, car parks and loading areas
  • Seasonal tasks such as gritting and leaf clearance

Support and service:

  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests
  • Set up rooms for exams, events and meetings
  • Work well with colleagues, contractors and visitors

Records and stock:

  • Keep accurate maintenance records, inspection logs and checklists
  • Support stock control for tools, materials and supplies

What we’re looking for

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant trade, or strong practical experience
  • Experience in maintenance, caretaking or facilities
  • Experience working in occupied buildings
  • Strong all round practical skills and good problem solving
  • Good health and safety awareness
  • Able to work independently, manage priorities and stay organised
  • Basic IT skills for job logging and record keeping
  • Reliable, proactive and flexible
  • Professional, polite approach
  • Physically fit and comfortable with manual tasks
  • Commitment to safeguarding

Desirable:

  • Education or public sector experience
  • First Aid qualification
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Salary up to £32,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Pension scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • 36 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays)
  • Strong CPD and development opportunities as our HE provision grows
  • Company and social events
  • Retail discounts through Bright Exchange
