Job description
THE OPPORTUNITY
Williams Parker, the region’s oldest law firm founded in 1925, is seeking a USPTO-registered Patent Attorney with 5+ years of experience to join and help expand the Firm’s Intellectual Property practice.
This opportunity is suited for an attorney who enjoys both patent practice and broader intellectual property counseling. The successful candidate will work with inventors, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, technology companies, and closely held businesses to protect innovation, commercialize intellectual property, and address the legal needs that arise as their businesses grow.
The role offers hands-on responsibility, close collaboration with experienced attorneys across the Firm, and meaningful opportunities to help build a full-service intellectual property platform in a growing market. Experienced IP paralegal support assists with filings and docketing, allowing the attorney to focus on substantive legal work, client service, and professional growth.
THE WORK YOU WILL LEAD
As a member of Williams Parker's Intellectual Property practice group, you will:
- Secure and manage patent rights. Prepare and prosecute patent applications, respond to Office actions, conduct patentability and prior-art analyses, and support domestic and international patent portfolios before the USPTO.
- Support a broad intellectual property practice. Assist with trademark registration, copyright, trade secret, website and application matters, cease-and-desist correspondence, domain name disputes, and related intellectual property counseling.
- Structure and commercialize intellectual property assets. Draft and negotiate licenses, technology agreements, confidentiality agreements, assignments, and commercial contracts involving intellectual property rights.
- Collaborate across sophisticated business matters. Support intellectual property due diligence and contract review in corporate transactions, and partner with attorneys in Corporate, Litigation, Labor & Employment, Healthcare, Real Estate, Tax, and Trusts & Estates.
- Help grow the patent practice. Build client relationships, participate in business development and educational initiatives, and contribute to efficient systems and institutional knowledge within the Firm’s Intellectual Property practice.

THE EXPERIENCE YOU WILL BRING
- Registered Patent Attorney. Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, supported by a degree in engineering or the sciences.
- Meaningful intellectual property experience. 5+ years of experience handling patent prosecution and advising clients on patent, trademark, technology, or related intellectual property matters.
- Practical and collaborative approach. The ability to translate complex legal and technical concepts into clear advice, manage matters efficiently, and work across practice groups as client needs evolve.
- Commitment to growth. An interest in developing client relationships, expanding substantive skills, and helping build the Firm’s patent and broader intellectual property capabilities. A portable book of business is welcome but not required.
- Professional credentials. Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in The Florida Bar, or admission elsewhere and a commitment to sit for the Florida Bar Examination.
A PLATFORM BUILT TO ENDURE
Williams Parker offers a collaborative platform for a Patent Attorney ready to deepen their practice, assume meaningful responsibility, and help build a full-service intellectual property offering from Sarasota.
- A century of excellence and a platform built to endure. Join one of Southwest Florida's most respected law firms, distinguished by long-standing client relationships, sophisticated legal work, and a century-long legacy of serving businesses, entrepreneurs, innovators, and families.
- The opportunity to build and shape a growing practice. Expand an established patent practice while helping strengthen the firm's Intellectual Property capabilities. Enjoy the flexibility, autonomy, and support to grow your practice while influencing the future direction of an emerging practice area.
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration that strengthens client relationships. Leverage deep capabilities across Corporate, Mergers & Acquisitions, Tax, Real Estate, Labor & Employment, Estate Planning, and Litigation to provide comprehensive counsel where intellectual property intersects with broader business objectives.
- Innovative clients and enduring relationships. Serve inventors, founders, manufacturers, technology companies, and privately held businesses whose intellectual property is central to their success. Build lasting relationships as a trusted advisor guiding legal and strategic decisions throughout the lifecycle of their businesses.
- Work defined by complexity, consequence, and ingenuity. Advise on the protection, commercialization, licensing, valuation, and strategic use of intellectual property assets that drive business growth, innovation, and enterprise value.
- A market without geographic boundaries. Practice from Sarasota while serving clients throughout Florida and beyond. The firm's platform supports attorneys whose client relationships extend well beyond the local market.
- Service elevated by attentiveness and judgment. Join a firm known for responsiveness, practical counsel, careful judgment, and a deeply personal approach to client service. Success is measured not only by legal outcomes, but by the strength of the relationships built along the way
- Resources that enable attorneys to focus on what matters most. Benefit from dedicated administrative, marketing, business development, technology, and knowledge-management support that allows attorneys to focus on client service, relationship development, and practice growth.
- A competitive total rewards package. Receive market-leading compensation; comprehensive health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance; and Employee Savings Plan and 401(k) benefits with employer contributions.
