About the Role

FinXL are seeking an experienced Microsoft AVD SME / AVD Cloud Engineer to join our team and take ownership of an enterprise Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) initiative; working with our federal government client.

In this technical specialist role, you will lead the initial Proof of Concept (PoC) phase to evaluate requirements, establish feasibility, and design a scalable, secure, and production-ready enterprise solution. You will provide deep engineering expertise across design, implementation, optimisation, security, FinOps/cost management, and service transition-ensuring the AVD platform delivers exceptional user experience and operational reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Proof of Concept & Solution Design: Lead the Azure Virtual Desktop Proof of Concept (PoC), evaluate performance, and design the end-to-end target state enterprise solution.

• AVD Strategy & Engineering: Define host pool strategies, image management standards, FSLogix profile container configurations, application delivery methods, and identity integrations.

• Environment Deployment: Deploy, configure, and maintain AVD host pools across Development, Test, and Production environments.

• Azure Service Management: Implement and govern supporting core Azure infrastructure, including:

  • Azure Virtual Machines & Compute

  • Azure Storage (Azure Files, NetApp Files, FSLogix)

  • Azure Networking (VNets, ExpressRoute, VPN, NSGs)

  • Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Insights

  • Azure Backup & Disaster Recovery

  • Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)

  • Intune & Microsoft Endpoint Manager

• Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Develop infrastructure automation scripts and deployment pipelines using PowerShell, Bicep, ARM Templates, Terraform, or Azure DevOps.

• Gold Image & Packaging Management: Develop, collaborate on, and maintain gold image management workflows, patching rhythms, and application packaging/delivery processes (e.g., MSIX app attach).

• Optimization & Governance: Drive platform performance tuning, session density optimization, cost management (auto-scaling), security hardening, and operational handover.

Key Requirements

Essential:

• Candidates must be an Australian Citizen to be considered for this position due to security clearance and client compliance requirements.

• Specialist AVD & PoC Expertise: Proven track record running Proof of Concept (PoC) initiatives and designing full lifecycle enterprise Azure Virtual Desktop solutions.

• FSLogix & Identity Integration: Deep hands-on experience configuring FSLogix profile management, RBAC, and Entra ID / Active Directory identity integrations.

• Cloud Infrastructure Mastery: Comprehensive knowledge across supporting Azure core services (Virtual Machines, Storage, Virtual Networking, Monitoring, Backup, and Intune).

• Infrastructure Automation: Hands-on automation skills using PowerShell, Bicep, ARM templates, Terraform, or Azure DevOps pipelines.

• Image Management & Packaging: Demonstrated experience establishing gold image build standards, application packaging, and automated maintenance processes.

Desirable Certifications:

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty (AZ-140)

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) or Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)
