Defined Software Development is seeking experienced Power BI Developer professionals for contract consulting opportunities supporting enterprise analytics and business intelligence initiatives.

The Power BI Developer will design, develop, secure, and optimize analytics solutions using Microsoft Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics. This role will work with enterprise data warehouse environments to deliver reliable, governed reporting and dashboards for both operational and leadership audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop Power BI semantic models, dashboards, reports, KPIs, and DAX measures.
• Build and optimize star-schema tabular models using enterprise data warehouse datasets.
• Develop Power Query/M transformations while maintaining data lineage and governance standards.
• Implement Row Level Security (RLS) and Object Level Security (OLS), workspace permissions, and access controls.
• Optimize report performance, dataset size, refresh processes, and overall Power BI reliability.
• Work with Import, DirectQuery, and Direct Lake models based on reporting and infrastructure requirements.
• Use Power BI Deployment Pipelines and Azure DevOps to support versioning, environment promotion, approvals, and CI/CD processes.
• Support automated refresh schedules, service principals, Key Vault secrets, and deployment processes.
• Collaborate with data owners, data stewards, analysts, PMO, InfoSec, and data warehouse teams to translate business needs into governed analytics solutions.
• Maintain technical documentation including data dictionaries, DAX documentation, data lineage, security matrices, refresh schedules, and standard operating procedures.
• Provide knowledge transfer and coaching to report developers and business users.
• Support Microsoft Purview, SharePoint knowledge bases, and enterprise data cataloging initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

• Strong experience developing enterprise Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models.
• Advanced DAX and Power Query/M skills.
• Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics and enterprise data warehouse environments.
• Experience implementing Power BI security, including RLS, OLS, workspace roles, and dataset permissions.
• Experience with Power BI performance optimization, including composite models, aggregations, and Incremental Refresh.
• Experience with Power BI Deployment Pipelines and Azure DevOps.
• Understanding of data governance, lineage, metadata, and enterprise reporting standards.
• Experience working with sensitive or regulated data and established security and compliance requirements.
• Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Microsoft Purview.
• Experience with DirectQuery, Direct Lake, and Import storage modes.
• Experience supporting Power BI in a Microsoft 365 Government Community Cloud (GCC) environment.
• Experience with CI/CD and automated Power BI deployment processes.
• Experience supporting CJIS- or HIPAA-regulated environments.
• Experience with paginated Power BI reporting.
