Job Description

Who We Are:

United Charter High Schools (UCHS) is a high-performing network of seven public charter high schools serving approximately 2,000 students across the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Our schools consistently exceed state graduation benchmarks and outperform New York State averages on Regent's exams while serving students from historically underserved communities.

At UCHS, we are a learning organization grounded in people, purpose, and progress. We care deeply, think critically, stay curious, communicate with purpose, and learn better together.

Our mission is to ensure that all students—regardless of academic background—graduate prepared for college, career, and a 21st-century economy.

Core Values in Action:

At UCHS, our work reflects our values:

  • We Care Deeply About People

  • We Never Stop Learning

  • We Think Critically and Act Thoughtfully

  • We Stay Curious and Embrace New Ideas

  • We Learn Better When We Learn Together

  • We Communicate with Purpose

The Opportunity:

UCHS is seeking a Director of Technology to lead and strengthen the technology systems that power our schools. This is a network leadership role responsible for technology strategy, infrastructure, cybersecurity, systems administration, application development, data integration, and technology-enabled operations across our seven schools and Central Office.

The Director of Technology will serve as a strategic partner and hands-on systems leader, working closely with school and Central Office teams to ensure technology reliably supports instruction, student services, enrollment, finance, human resources, operations, and communications. The successful candidate will combine strategic leadership with a builder mindset—setting standards, solving problems, documenting systems, managing vendors, and creating sustainable tools and processes.

Technology Infrastructure, Security & Systems Administration

  • Own network-wide technology strategy, infrastructure standards, cybersecurity practices, access governance, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

  • Manage user access, account lifecycle processes, permissions, and licensing across organizational systems and platforms.

  • Lead E-Rate administration and planning, including portal access, documentation, current applications, and future-cycle planning.

  • Oversee device management and inventory across the network, utilizing programs such as JAMF, Apple School Manager (ASM), Google Admin, Datto, and related tools.

  • Manage core technology platforms and infrastructure systems while coordinating with network technology consultants to support system performance, security, maintenance, and ongoing technology needs.

  • Manage technology vendors and service providers across connectivity, security, hardware, software, and other technology services.

  • Lead application approval and Education Law 2-d compliance processes and maintain appropriate privacy, security, and data-governance controls.

Programming, Automation & Application Development

  • Design, build, maintain, and improve internal applications, dashboards, scripts, integrations, and workflow automations that reduce manual work and improve data quality.

  • Oversee student and staff account provisioning, system integrations, documentation, and ongoing account management processes.

  • Maintain and improve network intranet functionality and related internal web tools.

  • Document source code, architecture, APIs, databases, dependencies, access pathways, deployment steps, and maintenance requirements to reduce single-person dependency.

Finance, HR & Operations Technology

  • Partner with Finance, HR, and Operations leadership to administer and improve technology-enabled business processes while maintaining clear functional ownership.

  • Support Finance tools and workflows including vendor adds, Nexus, Spend Center, Vendor Tracker, the Budget Tool, Per Session, Stripe, Zeffy, the Census Tool, purchasing platforms, SAM.gov/UEI/CAGE administration, and related reporting or approval processes.

  • Support HR technology platforms and internal tools, including system administration, integrations, workflow automation, access management, data integrity, and technical support for HR operations.

  • Ensure secure and efficient technology processes supporting the employee lifecycle, including provisioning, access changes, deactivation, documentation, and coordination across departments.

School Systems & Instructional Technology Leadership

  • Serve as the senior technology partner to school leaders, operations teams, academic leaders, teachers, and Central Office.

  • Support the management of academic and student information technology platforms, ensuring effective system administration, integrations, data flow, access, and continuity across the school-year lifecycle, such as  PowerSchool, Naviance, Clever, OTUS, Brisk, and Google Classroom.

  • Lead implementation, adoption, training, troubleshooting, and change management for new and existing technology initiatives in partnership with school and functional leaders.

  • Understand the operational rhythm of K–12 schools—including enrollment, attendance, scheduling, student services, testing, instruction, and family-facing processes—and ensure technology supports those functions effectively.

Marketing, Website, Enrollment & Vendor Leadership

  • Partner with Marketing, Communications, Enrollment, and school teams on our communication and recruitment platforms such as our website, student application system, and digital communication tools.

  • Manage technology vendors and external partners from implementation through escalation, renewals, access, service quality, and knowledge transfer.

  • Maintain a current inventory of systems, vendors, administrative owners, credentials/access pathways, contracts/renewals, integrations, and dependencies.

  • Maintain governance and continuity across critical systems through clear ownership, documentation, dependency tracking, and knowledge transfer.

Qualifications

The candidate for this role will be strategic, school-centered, and highly resourceful. You think in systems, communicate clearly with technical and nontechnical stakeholders, and are equally comfortable setting direction and working hands-on to solve complex problems.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in technology, information systems, computer science, education, business, or a related field required; equivalent highly relevant experience may be considered.

  • Master's degree or advanced technical credentials preferred.

  • New York State School Building Leader (SBL) or School District Leader (SDL) certification preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible technology, systems, data, or technology-enabled operations experience, including meaningful leadership responsibility.

  • Prior K–12 school or school-network leadership experience with direct accountability for school-based technology, student systems, operations, instruction, or organizational outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience with Google Workspace/Admin, cloud-based enterprise systems, identity/access environments, integrations, and technology vendors.

  • Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, or meaningfully manage applications, web tools, automations, dashboards, scripts, APIs, databases, or integrated workflows.

  • Strong cybersecurity, data privacy, project-management, change-management, documentation, and vendor-management capabilities.

  • Excellent judgment and communication skills, including the ability to translate technical issues for educators, executives, Finance/HR teams, vendors, and other nontechnical stakeholders.

  • Experience in a multi-school charter network, public school district, or similarly complex K–12 organization strongly preferred.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience

  • Health, dental, vision insurance

  • FSA/HSA

  • 8% employer 403(b) contribution

  • Professional development opportunities

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid network role with travel to all seven campuses as needed

  • Occasional evening or weekend availability during critical technology, implementation, or school-cycle periods

  • Cross-functional partnership with school leaders and Central Office teams across Academics, Finance, HR, Operations, Marketing/Communications, and Enrollment

Equal Opportunity:

UCHS is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who reflect the diverse communities we serve and from those historically underrepresented in leadership roles.
