Job Description

Job Summary

Software Engineer delivering software solutions and data pipelines for the Health and Clinical Analytics (HCA) team at the School of Public Health, University of Sydney. Full-time, two-year fixed term based at Camperdown with flexible work arrangements.

Salary: $131,108 $147,858 + highly competitive superannuation (17%).

About the Opportunity

The HCA team designs and coordinates a broad and growing portfolio of practice-changing trials and other clinical studies. This dynamic and cross disciplinary team takes pride in its reputation for delivering innovative research of the highest standard, supporting a network of clinicians, researchers and community members with the shared motive to improve health through novel approaches to clinical research backed by cutting edge analytics.

Project Focus

Learning Healthcare System - a collaboration with the Sydney Children's Hospital Network and other children's hospitals, designing and implementing a state of the art digital infrastructure system to support a learning healthcare system. The infrastructure transforms electronic medical record data into an analysable format, enabling researchers to safely access data, perform analyses and report results to clinicians in a timely manner.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Work under broad direction and actively contribute to the achievement of research work carried out by the work unit, collaborating closely with the leadership team to ensure that the requirements of the research project are addressed appropriately.
  • Collaborate with the Software Development Manager and Director to develop IT plans for the research project(s), impacting the immediate outcomes of the research project.
  • Resolve complex matters related to the research projects under management and provide sound advice and recommendations, exercising independent judgement and applying professional know how to achieve work goals.
  • Provide expert advice on software and data engineering principles and best practices, technical support, and possible solutions that meet business needs.
  • Ensure effective data solutions meet user requirements by understanding business processes and strategic challenges.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of data profiling, source target mappings, ingestion development, tuning and optimisation, testing, and implementation.
  • Develop and design enterprise data models in line with data modelling standards and guidelines.
  • Develop automated testing processes to maintain quality and detect errors as early as possible.
  • Assist in developing project plans, assigning appropriate technical resources, and providing estimates on costs, time, and scope.
  • Participate in projects that enhance and optimise new and existing business processes.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Information Technology) or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Extensive experience designing and building applications and data pipelines, including event driven sources, transformations, resilience, and API design.
  • Extensive experience designing, maintaining, and optimizing IT infrastructure (AWS), including security best practices.
  • Extensive experience with data modelling, implementation, and management.
  • Extensive experience developing code to perform data operations including extraction, cleansing, and transformation.
  • Extensive experience in SQL and Python (required); other skills considered.
  • Experience developing secure web based applications and data.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Experience with Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
  • Demonstrable ability to utilise AI models to enhance development productivity and quality.
  • Desirable: broad understanding of applicable security and privacy standards and legislation relating to personal health data.
  • Desirable: proficiency in health and research data applications and their APIs (e.g. REDCap, WebPas, iCM iSoft).
  • Proven analytical and problem solving abilities, working independently and within a team.
  • Excellent time and workload management skills, prioritising effectively, managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and achieving required outcomes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
