Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Public Programs manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of public exhibition and collection-related programming for all ages, in pursuit of lifelong learning through the exploration of art at the Art Museum. These include, but are not limited to, lectures, panel discussions, gallery talks, and art-making studio programs.

This position will also be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of two large annual programs - Summer Camp and the 10x10 Teen Art Show, and the museum's monthly CAM Kids Day program- As well as other programs that may arise.

This position works cooperatively with other museum colleagues and the community to develop engaging and accessible programming. This position is considered the museum's key staff member for expertise related to current theories and practices in public programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and manages public programs that strengthen exhibitions, the collection, and the visitor experience in close partnership with curators and Learning & Interpretation staff.

  • Develops and implements new approaches to interpretation informed by current learning theory, technology, and museum best practices.

  • Continuously evaluates programs for all ages-including workshops, classes, lectures, gallery talks, and other activities-using varied methods.

  • Develops and monitors program budgets and manages purchasing and payments in compliance with museum policy.

  • Coordinates with museum divisions on museum-wide events; partners with Marketing to promote programs and Visitor Services to support registration

  • Sustains community collaborations and builds new institutional and organizational partnerships that enhance quality of life in Greater Cincinnati.

  • Collaborates with Division of Learning & Interpretation teammates to set long-range goals, interim objectives, and a shared, systematic approach to interpretive programming.

  • Provides the Director of Learning & Interpretation and Philanthropy Division with narratives and statistics for grant proposals and final reports.

  • Participates in museum conferences, workshops, and professional development related to interpretive programming, interpretation, outreach, and visitor needs.

  • Works a Tuesday-Saturday schedule to accommodate those programs that take place on the weekend.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Learning & Interpretation.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree in art history, art education, or museum education is required.
  • Five years of related experience, especially in museum education, art education, public programming, and/or community-based collaborations.
  • Must have excellent and professional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • The ability to effectively present information and respond to visitors' needs is central to this position.
  • Strong organizational skills; must be able to manage numerous projects simultaneously and to work independently and at a high level of productivity in a bustling office.
  • Cooperates in a teamwork fashion with all co-workers to accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity to co-workers and visitors
  • Provides service excellence and portrays a positive and professional image of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
