SOE Engineer

The Role

Reporting to the IT Manager, you will be one half of a tight two-person IT team. You'll be the person our staff turn to when something breaks, and the one driving the projects that stop it breaking again. You'll be our go-to person for Microsoft 365, Apple and mobile device management, and you'll own our desktop fleet and its security controls end to end. And because we're an ISP, you'll work alongside our network engineers, developers, sales and support teams. Few IT roles offer this much variety, and you'll love it. We'd love to meet someone who treats their home lab as a hobby, not a chore. You already run Proxmox or ESXi in the garage, have an opinion on Intune vs. JumpCloud and read changelogs for fun. You'll be free to design and build the solutions you think are right, not just the ones on a ticket.

We trust you to make good calls when no one's watching, flag problems before they become incidents, and keep learning because you're curious. You won't be going it alone, though. What you'll be doing

• Running helpdesk support that fixes root causes instead of just closing tickets.
• Owning security alerts from triage through to resolution.
• Managing identity platforms including Entra ID, Okta, AD and our in-house developed platforms.
• Managing a fleet that's mostly Windows, Apple and iOS, keeping it secure, current and well documented.
• Patching servers, endpoints and appliances.
• Owning backups end to end, running, restoring and regularly testing them.
• Administering Intune/365, JumpCloud and Apple device management as well as our other cloud platforms.
• Keeping the IT asset register and documentation accurate and useful.
• Running on-boarding, off-boarding, access control, change management and reporting.
• Using the latest AI tooling to automate and improve our systems and monitoring, so routine jobs run on their own and faults are caught before users notice them.
• Planning and delivering IT projects, including ideas of your own like automation that removes repetitive work, security uplift, a simpler network, or anything that makes life easier for you and your users.

What we're looking for

• Demonstrated expertise troubleshooting Windows 11, macOS, iOS, Windows Server, firewalls and VPN appliances, the kind that comes from curiosity as much as job experience.
• Strong M365 and AD/Entra administration, including PowerShell scripting and application packaging/deployment.
• Solid problem-solving, communication and prioritisation skills, and the judgement to know when to escalate and when to just handle it.
• A track record of self-directed learning: certifications, a home lab, side projects, contributions to open source, or whatever else shows you keep learning.

Desirable

• Experience implementing ACSC Essential Eight controls.
• Microsoft and Apple certifications.
• 3-5 years in a similar role.

• A security or reliability problem you found or handled (in a tool such as Threatlocker or Huntress, or on your own systems): how you triaged it, when you would escalate, and what you changed to stop it recurring.
• An example of an IT project or improvement you identified and delivered largely on your own initiative, and what it achieved for the organisation. Tell us what you would do differently now.
• How you keep your skills current, whether through a home lab, certifications, side projects, open-source contributions or something else. Tell us what you want to learn next.
