Job Title: Lead, Systems Engineer - Mission Systems Programs Job Code: 44717 Job Location: Rochester, NY Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off Job Description: This lead level systems engineering role supports custom communications solutions for mission-critical defense programs. You will translate customer requirements into practical system designs across tactical radios, networking, SATCOM, and platform integration, leading efforts from concept development through design, integration, and delivery Essential Functions:
- Lead the system design of integrated communications solutions using L3Harris products, third-party equipment, and custom mounting or peripheral hardware.
- Design and integrate communications systems for vehicles, shelters, transit cases, and fixed-site installations.
- Own systems engineering work from kickoff through design, including but not limited to family tree diagrams, interconnect diagrams, VCRM (Verification Cross Reference Matrix), BOM creation and management, jurisdiction and classification review, and creating prototypes of systems.
- Map out system architectures and technical approaches that meet or exceed customer requirements with proposed solutions.
- Evaluate technical solutions and resolve technical issues throughout a program.
- Manage parallel priorities across multiple programs and keep deliverables moving in a fast-paced environment.
- Work effectively across Engineering, Sales, Program Management, Trade Compliance, and Operations to keep projects on schedule.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences, including customers and internal stakeholders.
- Adapt quickly as customer needs change such as for a customer demonstration event or during field support activities.
- Support key business milestones such as shipments, demonstrations, field trials, and proposal pursuits.
- Help proposal efforts by developing or gathering technical inputs, labor estimates, and recurring or non-recurring engineering cost details, and make assumptions based on experience.
- Contribute strong technical judgment, customer focus, and collaboration skills to each program.
- Be comfortable working with customers and cultures from around the world.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, program, and proposal teams to guide system design, trade studies, risk reduction, and program execution from concept through delivery.
- Support customer and internal technical reviews, ensuring solutions align with performance, schedule, cost, and requirements.
- Ability to travel up to 25% annually. Typical travel is closer to 10% and may include international trips of up to two weeks Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, computer, software, or systems engineering and 9+ years of relevant experience; or a master's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience; or 13+ years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Hands-on knowledge of defense communications products and the operating environments supported by L3Harris, with expertise in one or more of the following areas: tactical radio systems (HF, VHF, UHF, microwave, SATCOM), IP networking, wireless voice and data systems, platform integration, or C4ISR design.
- Experience with custom RF and digital cable design.
- RF Propagation Analysis experience.
- Understanding of power systems, including but not limited to solar, grid-tied, and generator-based systems.
- Experience leading and reviewing systems engineering efforts from concept development through final delivery.
- Proposal experience, including work breakdown structure (WBS) development, basis of estimate (BOE) preparation, detailed scheduling, and technical writing.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience driving process improvement in CMMI and ISO 9001 environments.
- International travel experience and foreign language proficiency are a plus.
- Proficiency with SharePoint, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Visio, with a willingness to use internal AI tools.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $110,500 - $205,500 This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
