Job Description
We are seeking a creative and dependable instructor to join our afterschool program at PS166. You’ll lead Creative Writing on Mondays and Jr. Poets on Thursdays, then support the lead instructor in an art class on Fridays.
In Creative Writing, students will explore imagination, self-expression, and storytelling through writing prompts, games, and engaging exercises. You’ll help them build foundational writing skills while encouraging their own ideas and voices.
In Jr. Poets, students will discover rhythm, rhyme, and playful ways to express themselves. Activities may include read-alouds, haikus, shape poems, hands-on writing prompts, and opportunities to share their work in a warm, supportive setting.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate Creative Writing and Jr. Poets lessons.
- Create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and work.
- Adapt activities for students with different writing abilities and levels of confidence.
- Support the lead art instructor with student projects, classroom management, materials, setup, and cleanup on Fridays.
- Take attendance and communicate with the site team about student and class needs.

- Monday, 2:40–4:20 PM: Creative Writing Lead
- Thursday, 2:40–4:20 PM: Jr. Poets Lead
- Friday, 2:40–4:20 PM: Art Assistant

Minimum Qualifications
- Experience working with children in a school, afterschool program, camp, childcare, or similar setting.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Ability to plan and lead age-appropriate activities.
- Reliable availability on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching creative writing, poetry, literacy, or a related subject.
- Experience managing a classroom of elementary-aged students.
- Interest or experience in visual arts.
Lead instructor compensation (Monday and Thursday): $30–$35 per hour, depending on experience.
Art assistant compensation (Friday): $25–$30 per hour, depending on experience.
