The Senior Transportation Safety & Compliance Specialist serves as a regional support resource for supply chain center, transportation, logistics, and regional leadership. The role helps strengthen transportation safety performance and supports compliance with applicable local, regional, state, federal, DOT, FMCSA, and company requirements by providing guidance, coaching, field observations, documentation review, and follow-up support across the assigned region.
The Specialist uses transportation safety data, compliance records, telematics, incident trends, and field observations to identify risk, recommend corrective actions, and support center leaders who retain operational ownership for implementation. The role requires strong relationship-building skills, practical regulatory knowledge, and the ability to translate safety expectations into clear, actionable support for local teams.
The Specialist also encourages feedback from transportation teams, helps remove barriers to safe work through escalation and support, and verifies that corrective actions are completed, documented, and effective before closure.
Responsibilities
- Conduct periodic DOT/FMCSA compliance reviews covering driver qualification files, hours-of-service and ELD records, vehicle inspection and maintenance documentation, annual inspections, equipment markings, required training, and accident files.
- Monitor transportation accident, injury, roadside inspection, CSA BASIC, telematics, and compliance data to identify trends, prioritize risk, and recommend proactive mitigation strategies.
- Support commercial motor vehicle accident and driver injury investigations by reviewing documentation, assisting with root cause analysis, recommending corrective actions, and verifying completion and effectiveness of assigned actions.
- Provide field-based driver coaching through ride-alongs, in-cab camera/video review, telematics insights, compliance findings, and real-time operational observations.
- Deliver or support transportation safety training, including defensive driving, hazard recognition, pre-trip/post-trip inspections, yard safety, equipment safety, ELD compliance, and company transportation safety protocols.
- Verify that transportation team members follow company procedures for yard operations, DVIR completion, accident reporting, inspection follow-up, and corrective action closure.
- Support center transportation leaders through direct coaching and train-the-trainer support to build consistent transportation safety competency across the region.
- Prepare clear reports, scorecards, and trend summaries for center, regional, and senior leadership to support visibility, follow-up, risk prioritization, and center accountability.
- Provide regional support on transportation safety priorities, compliance expectations, and consistent execution of company safety policies.
- Partner with site transportation teams and regional logistics leaders to review current trends, field risks, safety initiatives, and required follow-up actions.
- Participate in regional safety calls and center reviews by sharing relevant data, identifying common issues, and recommending targeted coaching, training, or follow-up.
- Escalate significant transportation safety concerns, repeat compliance gaps, and high-risk trends to site, regional, and key stakeholders with recommended actions.
- Track status of assigned corrective actions and verify that agreed actions are completed, documented, and effective before recommending closure.
- Support a proactive safety culture by helping leaders move from incident response to risk prevention, verification, and sustained improvement.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, transportation, logistics or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in transportation safety management roles within a large-scale corporate environment, preferably within the restaurant or food service industry.
- Possess knowledge of DOT guidelines, OSHA compliance and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
- Strong experience with fleet telematics (Lytx, Geotab or Samsara) as well as defensive driving techniques and best practices.
- Proven leadership experience in a complex safety environment, with the ability to influence across different levels of leadership.
- Strong understanding of transportation safety standards, risk management, and regulatory compliance within the industry. Knowledge of Canadian transportation safety regulations is a plus.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect, engage, and influence people at all levels of the organization.
