A leading manufacturer in South Wales is looking for 2 contract Process Engineers to join their site engineering team on a 12-month basis. You will be part of a growing site undergoing significant investment, where your expertise will directly contribute to world-class manufacturing performance. The positions will be outside IR35 and offering an estimated hourly rate of £40 - £50 p/h, however this may be negotiable depending on the applicant's experience.

Commissioning:

  • Plan and execute process aspects of commissioning, qualification, and validation activities such as pre-start checks, functional testing, water runs, chemical commissioning trials, and engineering batches according to the phased start-up timeline.
  • Attend FAT and SAT, meticulously capturing reports and evidence for system turnover packs to ensure seamless transition between project phases.
  • Support system-by-system turnover processes including walkdowns; define and close snag or punch lists as well as open-ends registers to meet agreed acceptance criteria.
  • Drive closure of PSSR actions so that each Readiness Gate is achieved on schedule without compromising safety or quality standards.
  • Develop and maintain isolation registers along with confirmed isolation schedules ahead of mechanical completion to ensure process safety during commissioning.
  • Assist with dangerous substances inventory management and COMAH threshold assessment while maintaining pressure relief device registers with set-pressures, sizing basis, and certification documentation.
  • Coordinate SIMOPS management during construction, commissioning, and operations windows by facilitating permits, isolations, and stop-work authority.
  • Participate actively in Process Hazard Assessments (HAZOP, What-If, LOPA) while ensuring compliance with DSEAR, ATEX, COMAH requirements; support site MoC processes.
  • Develop PFDs, P&IDs, mass/energy balances, safe operating envelopes; own process design basis ensuring accurate technical documentation is maintained within EQMS.
  • Author SOPs and SSOW required for safe start-up; provide day-to-day process engineering support during start-up including troubleshooting issues and driving corrective actions to closure.

CAPEX:

  • Lead and support capital expenditure projects from concept through commissioning, ensuring all deliverables meet design intent, are completed on time, and stay within budget.
  • Own technical project definition including FEED, equipment sizing, specification development, RFQs, and participation in design reviews.
  • Manage technical interactions with suppliers, contractors, and equipment vendors by building trusted business-partner relationships that facilitate successful project outcomes.
  • Plan and execute commissioning, qualification, and validation activities such as pre-start checks, functional testing, water trials, and production trials to ensure seamless handover for beneficial use.
  • Escalate project risks, budget deviations, or programme slippage promptly through established governance processes to maintain transparency and accountability.
  • Provide day-to-day technical process engineering support to manufacturing operations by troubleshooting process issues and driving corrective actions through to closure.
  • Develop and maintain PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances, as well as safe operating envelopes for optimal plant performance.
  • Support root cause investigations using data-driven analysis of process performance to ensure effective action close-out and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in process hazard assessments (HAZOP, What-If, LOPA) as a subject-matter expert while driving resulting actions to completion for enhanced safety compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality Assurance, EHS, R&D, Supply Chain, Commercial teams, and external partners to achieve site objectives.

The ideal Engineers will bring substantial experience from an industrial manufacturing setting, such as chemical, oil & gas, Petrochem or a similar process engineering industry, with demonstrable experience on their application delivering previous relevant projects:

  • Degree in Chemical or Process Engineering or equivalent experience demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of chemical engineering principles.
  • Minimum of five years' proven experience in process engineering within an industrial manufacturing environment where you have delivered relevant commissioning or CAPEX projects.
  • Demonstrable understanding of process safety standards including DSEAR/ATEX legislation.
  • Strong analytical capability paired with a data-driven mindset that enables effective troubleshooting and root cause analysis for process optimisation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, that allow you to convey complex technical information clearly across multidisciplinary teams.
  • High competency with MS Office suite for technical documentation management and reporting purposes.
  • Ability to take ownership of tasks by delivering activities through to completion while maintaining accuracy in controlled technical documentation.
  • Proactive approach focused on continuous improvement initiatives that drive operational excellence within the manufacturing environment.
  • Awareness of GMP manufacturing practices as well as ISO management systems is advantageous.
