Job Description

Senior Data Engineer - Remote

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to take a key role in developing, modernising and improving the organisations data platform and data warehouse capability.

This is a hands-on senior engineering position with genuine ownership. Youll be responsible for designing and building robust data pipelines, developing scalable data models and helping shape the future architecture of the data platform.

Youll be joining an environment where there is an existing data estate to improve, alongside significant opportunity to introduce modern engineering practices and technologies. Microsoft Fabric will play an important role in the ongoing modernisation of the platform, so were looking for someone who can bring strong practical experience of Fabric and help drive its adoption.

Youll work closely with Data, BI, Technology, Business Analysis and wider project teams, while also providing technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.

What Youll Be Doing
  • Take ownership of the design, development and ongoing improvement of the organisations data platform and warehouse.

  • Design, build and optimise reliable data pipelines across multiple source systems.

  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT processes to transform complex operational data into trusted, usable datasets.

  • Lead the modernisation of the existing data warehouse and data platform, with Microsoft Fabric at the heart of the future architecture.

  • Design and maintain robust data models using approaches such as Kimball, dimensional modelling, star schemas and medallion architecture.

  • Work across a variety of source systems where data structures, integration capabilities and data quality can vary significantly.

  • Identify and resolve complex data quality and performance issues across source systems, pipelines, transformations and reporting layers.

  • Introduce and improve monitoring, logging, testing, validation and recovery processes.

  • Work closely with BI Analysts to develop high-quality warehouse models, marts and reusable datasets.

  • Contribute to the development of data engineering standards, including source control, peer review, automated testing, CI/CD and repeatable deployments.

  • Help establish and improve CI/CD, monitoring and operational support practices across the data platform.

  • Document data lineage, transformation logic, business definitions and architectural decisions.

  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level Data Engineers, sharing knowledge, reviewing technical work and helping develop engineering capability across the team.

  • Act as a senior technical voice within the data function, challenging assumptions and helping shape the future direction of the platform.

What Were Looking For

Were looking for an experienced Data Engineer who is comfortable taking ownership, solving complex problems and operating in an environment where not everything has already been defined.

Youll ideally bring:

  • Strong commercial experience working as a Senior Data Engineer or in a similar senior-level data engineering position.

  • Excellent SQL skills, including writing, optimising and maintaining complex queries.

  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Management Studio.

  • Proven experience designing and developing data warehouses, analytical platforms and data pipelines.

  • Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, data transformation and pipeline architecture.

  • Solid knowledge of data modelling, including dimensional modelling, Kimball, star schemas and/or medallion architecture.

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, with the ability to contribute to and influence the ongoing development of a Fabric-based data platform.

  • Strong experience across the Microsoft Azure data ecosystem.

  • Experience working across multiple databases, applications and source systems.

  • A strong understanding of data quality, lineage, governance and the challenges associated with inconsistent source data.

  • Experience implementing monitoring, testing, validation and performance improvements across data platforms.

  • Experience using Git/source control and working with modern engineering practices.

  • Experience with CI/CD and automated deployment processes.

  • Experience mentoring, coaching or technically supporting less experienced engineers.

  • The confidence to make technical decisions, challenge existing approaches and explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What Were Looking For in You

This is a role for someone who enjoys building things properly, rather than simply keeping the lights on.

Youll be:

  • Pragmatic and commercially minded, with a strong engineering mindset.

  • Comfortable taking ownership and being accountable for the quality of your work.

  • Confident making technical decisions and explaining the reasoning behind them.

  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and helping define the solution where requirements aren't always clear.

  • Naturally curious and interested in improving how data is collected, processed and consumed.

  • Someone who can challenge poor assumptions constructively and influence stakeholders.

  • A supportive technical leader who enjoys mentoring and developing other engineers.
