Job Description
Title - Technical Writer/Editor
Client - NOAA
Location - La Jolla, San Diego CA.
Type - Part Time (20 hours a week)
Editorial Support
Task 1: The candidate shall provide editorial services including:
1. Draft, edit, and proofread marine biological and oceanographic scientific technical manuscripts prior to submission of and during the editorial publication process. This includes making appropriate documents 508 compliant.
2. Draft, format, edit and prepare for publication, Center specific scientific research and news on the Southwest Fisheries Science Center website for publicizing to the scientific community and broader public.
3. Draft, write, format and edit proceedings and reviews for scientific research meetings, national and international, as required.
4. Edit, format and proofread all draft scientific technical reports, scientific research books, papers, and presentations, as required prior to presentation or publication. Edit and finalize Informational Documents.
5. Edit Working scientific documents, scientific communications. Format, edit, and finalize all ISC Plenary documents before and after Plenary Sessions within deadline for the Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission Northern Committee annual meetings.

Deliverables:
1. Provide detailed log of all assisted, prepared or edited documents and present to the Director’s Office monthly.
2. Maintain a log of all updates made to the SWFSC website and provide to the Director’s Office monthly.
3. Provide a detailed written status review of all ISC Communications, Working Papers, informational documents and plenary final reports as requested. Monitor all Meeting Documents and assign reference numbers for tracking purposes.

B. Editorial Support
For Technical Writer/Editor II positions, the contractor shall possess at a minimum: Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, Science or other related discipline from an accredited 4 year college; 4 to 5 years of responsible post-university work experience in editing English-language scientific publications; 2 years of work experience as a full-time scientific and technical editor, high levels of skill and experience in drafting, copyediting and 508 compliance and use of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Open Science tools, and additional scientific publishing, Cloud Management database, and web content management program as needed; working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style; basic knowledge of printing technology and online manuscript processing; skill and experience in publications design and layout using Adobe InDesign; proficiency in technical writing; demonstrated skills in teamwork and interpersonal communication.
Relevant experience and skills must include, at a minimum:
1. The ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
2. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
3. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Open Science tools and web content management programs.
4. Experience maintaining and monitoring a large number of different projects at any given time.
5. The ability to communicate effectively with scientific and with non-scientific audiences in common language
6. Must possess skills and past experience that collectively reflect an aptitude for--and full understanding of--the stated duties, responsibilities, and required deliverables of this contract.
