About the role

We are seeking a Junior Research Fellow or Research Fellow to join our group focused on quantitative genetics and breeding program design. This role will contribute to a GRDC funded project that will investigate the development of heterotic pools for breeding hybrid canola, in collaboration with diverse research and industry partners. The successful applicant will develop and apply simulation approaches to compare alternative breeding strategies that manage genetic variance and diversity over time. This will involve building computational tools to model breeding populations under different scenarios, analysing genomic and phenotypic data to inform these models, and evaluating how different strategies perform across short and long term timeframes. The appointee will contribute to the development of clear and reproducible simulation pipelines, communicate results in a transparent and rigorous manner, and translate findings into practical insights for breeding program design. They will be expected to publish research outcomes in peer reviewed journals, contribute to postgraduate supervision where appropriate, and assist in the development of future research grants.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • For the Junior Research Fellow level, experience with statistical analysis using quantitative genetic models and a strong understanding of quantitative genetics applied to plant or animal breeding programs, experience in computer programming, and familiarity with simulation modelling for breeding programs.
  • For the Research Fellow level, extensive experience with statistical analysis of quantitative genetic models, a high level of experience in computer programming and a strong record of research achievement, and a demonstrated ability to take initiatives and independently develop research ideas.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in teams, communicate respectfully and contribute to a positive team culture.
