Who are we?
• XNRGY Climate Systems is a North American provider of sustainable design and advanced manufacturing of custom air treatment and liquid cooling systems. Our equipment supports demanding applications, including hyperscale data centers, healthcare, pharmaceutical and semiconductor facilities, electric vehicle battery manufacturing, and life sciences.
• The Field Operations team commissions oil-free centrifugal chillers, computer room air handlers (CRAHs), and fan arrays at customer sites. The Lead Field Service Technician leads this work, represents XNRGY on site, and is accountable for the quality and technical record of each startup.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead delivery and site acceptance, pre-functional verification, startup, and functional performance testing for air-cooled oil-free centrifugal chillers, CRAH units, and fan arrays.
• Follow the commissioning plan and its entry and exit criteria. Coordinate with the third-party commissioning authority when one is appointed, and support integrated systems testing led by the owner’s authority.
• Confirm site conditions, installation, and required services are ready before energizing equipment. Stop and escalate work when the equipment is not ready or site conditions are unsafe.
• Diagnose faults using trend and alarm data and systematic troubleshooting. Safely shut down, isolate, recover, and restart live equipment, returning it to a known good operating condition.
• Perform refrigerant-side work, including evacuation, charging, leak detection, and recovery, in accordance with requirements in the jurisdiction of work.
• Diagnose centrifugal compressor, drive, and bearing behavior within the machine’s operating range, including surge behavior and capacity limits. Escalate complex issues with a complete technical history.
• Work across chiller-level PLCs and compressor-level controllers. Verify software and firmware against released configurations for each unit.
• Configure static IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways. Commission and troubleshoot building management system integration over BACnet, Modbus, and EtherNet/IP, and distinguish equipment faults from configuration and network faults.
• Read sequences of operation and identify where they will not produce the intended behavior. Program and diagnose variable frequency drives and interpret drive faults against machine behavior.
• Complete controlled commissioning records at the point of work. Record readings, photographs, signatures, delivery condition, time, unit, activity, commissioning level, and deficiencies, and track issues through closure.
• Write complete field reports that customers, commissioning authorities, and other reviewers can understand without interpretation. Preserve evidence needed to establish responsibility for defects or damage outside XNRGY.
• Lead the assigned crew, allocate work, maintain quality standards, and supervise certified service partners working under XNRGY direction. Mentor technicians and sign off practical competence when qualified.
• Identify work outside the sold scope before performing it and report it for pricing. Do not absorb out-of-scope work into the commissioning assignment.
• Follow NFPA 70E or CSA Z462, lockout/tagout, permits, method statements, site change control, and other site safety requirements. Stop work and escalate unsafe conditions.
• Work at active construction sites and live data centers, including at height, in confined spaces, and around energized equipment. Work schedules may include nights, weekends, shutdowns, and extended periods on site.
• Represent XNRGY professionally with owners, general contractors, commissioning authorities, and other trades. Manage time independently, communicate clearly, and escalate early when an issue needs support.
Preferred Qualifications
• Required: Master refrigeration mechanic with at least 10 years of commercial or industrial chiller experience, including at least five years working directly with centrifugal machines.
• Required: A trade qualification such as NITC STAR HVACR Mastery in the United States, or 313A, a provincial equivalent, or Red Seal endorsement in Canada, or a demonstrably equivalent qualification.
• Required: Personally performed chiller startups and commissioning. Able to explain the equipment commissioned, faults encountered, and the troubleshooting reasoning used.
• Required: Demonstrated controls, automation, and networking experience sufficient to commission and troubleshoot chiller systems and building management system integration without a controls specialist on site.
• Required: Experience executing commissioning under a third-party commissioning authority on mission-critical or comparable projects, working to a construction schedule alongside general contractors and other trades.
• Required: EPA Section 608 Universal certification in the United States, or the equivalent required in the jurisdiction of work. This certification is required from day one.
• Required: Current NFPA 70E or CSA Z462 qualification; OSHA 10- or 30-hour Construction training, or Canadian equivalent; and a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
• Required: Experience producing complete, technically defensible field documentation and developing or mentoring junior technicians.
• Preferred: Commissioning credentials such as CBCP, BCxP, CX-PC, or CxA; RSES refrigeration certifications; manufacturer controls, automation, or networking certifications; or a second electrical trade qualification.
• Preferred: Able to work independently at customer sites, meet construction schedules, maintain composure under pressure, and escalate unfamiliar issues early with a complete account of the problem.
