Job Description

Job Title: Employment and Education Support Worker

FLSA Status: Full Time, Non-exempt

Classification: Professional

Department: International Center-ESOL  

Office(s): 80 Maiden Lane

Reports to: Workforce Project Manager

Supervisory Responsibilities:  Yes             No     X         

The salary for this position is: $50,000 - $60.000 annually.

Summary: The International Center provides educational programming for newly arrived immigrants and refugees with the goal of improving learners’ English proficiency and communication skills. Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Employment and Education Support Worker will assist students enrolled in the Bridge to Healthcare Program. This program will identify and recruit qualified adult students who are interested in careers in healthcare and related fields and offer access to an enhanced workforce training program. After students complete their training, the worker will provide job placement assistance and ongoing support to help students retain employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

1.      Job Development

  • Establish and build working relationships with area healthcare employers, specifically those employing Home Health Aides and Certified Nursing Assistants, across New York City and Westchester.
  • Locate appropriate employment opportunities for students through telephone contact, on-site visits, digital and direct correspondence with potential employers.
  • Attend job fairs and respond to job advertisements posted by businesses.
  • Negotiate and advocate with the workforce field, business community, and employers on behalf of clients and serve as support for issues including salary, wages, working conditions, etc.

2.      Job Placement and Retention

  • Complete successful job placements in coordination with students and employers.
  • Verify and document hourly wage and placement information in accordance with program guidelines. Collect and organize student documents in ECM and other databases.
  • Conduct post job placement follow-up via phone call with students and employers at prescribed intervals, e.g. 30, 60, and 90 days
  • Serve as a resource for students and employers to troubleshoot post-placement issues. Work individually with students as needed.
  • Monitor post-placement retention and document contacts.
  • Assess students’ ongoing employment needs, including opportunities for job upgrades, vocational training and career development opportunities, and provide one-on-one assistance.
  • Monitor and record services using internal online tools and databases, including the number and type of placements, to ensure program-specific goals are on track.

3.      Job Counseling

  • Develop a comprehensive employment plan for each program participant.
  • Identify potential barriers to employment and develop an appropriate action plan in coordination with program staff.
  • Coordinate with student support and instructional staff on service delivery to address identified barriers.
  • Assess students’ ongoing employment barriers and plan for and make appropriate interventions throughout the service period.
  • Assist students directly with all aspects of job preparation, including completing job applications, preparing résumés, conducting mock job interviews, appearance counseling, communication expectations, time management/scheduling, using job-related digital tools and platforms, and navigating the public transportation system.
  • Counsel students on US workforce expectations, including understanding payroll procedures, tax withholding, payroll deductions, and benefits packages.
  • Accompany students for job interviews as needed, and if appropriate.
  • Design and deliver workshops for students on topics related to employment, in person and online.

4.      Administrative

  • Participate in intake, assessment, and enrollment sessions for the Bridge Program.
  • In collaboration with team, coordinating and facilitating program-related events.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and training.
  • Maintain case files and electronic documentation in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Support for other the International Center or agency activities, as requested.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:  

This is a full-time position, and work hours are generally Monday through Friday with evening hours required; classes are held from 5 to 9:30pm. Weekend hours may be required to meet student needs. 

Working conditions and physical demands required:

  • Remain in a stationary position at a workstation and use a computer at least 75% of the time. 

Qualifications:

Education and/or experience required:

  • BA in community relations, healthcare, adult education or other relevant field; or 3+ years of related experience in the field.
  • Relevant work experience in job development with immigrant or refugee populations.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies: 

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.), Google Drive Suite, WhatsApp, and Zoom; ability to learn new platforms and databases as needed.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Fluency in English and a second language commonly spoken by client population (Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, Haitian-Creole or French strongly preferred.)
