Android Platform Engineer (Remote)

Seeking a Senior Android Platform Engineer to join a high-impact mobile platform team supporting one of the nation's largest digital commerce applications.
This is not a traditional feature development role. Instead, you will focus on building and maintaining the foundational Android platform capabilities that enable dozens of feature teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performing customer experiences.
The Android Platform team owns many of the application's cross-cutting concerns, including performance optimization, networking, caching, SDK governance, application architecture, build tooling, privacy, security, accessibility, and other platform-wide capabilities.
The ideal candidate has experience supporting large-scale production Android applications and enjoys solving complex engineering challenges that improve platform health, scalability, performance, and developer experience across the organization.
What You'll Do
  • Improve application performance, including startup times, rendering performance, memory utilization, and responsiveness
  • Design, build, and maintain foundational platform capabilities used by multiple Android feature teams
  • Optimize application caching, networking, and data delivery strategies
  • Evaluate, implement, and govern platform-wide SDKs, mobile tooling, and engineering standards
  • Improve Android build performance, CI/CD efficiency, and developer productivity
  • Establish and evolve technical patterns that support scalable Android development
  • Partner closely with feature engineering teams to solve platform-related challenges
  • Support privacy, security, accessibility, and compliance initiatives across the mobile ecosystem
  • Monitor application health and proactively identify opportunities for platform improvements
  • Conduct performance profiling, diagnostics, benchmarking, and root cause analysis
  • Contribute to platform architecture decisions and long-term mobile engineering strategy
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical design sessions
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues within a large-scale consumer-facing application
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced Android development experience using Kotlin and the Android SDK
  • Deep understanding of Android application architecture and platform internals
  • Experience supporting enterprise-scale or consumer-facing mobile applications in production
  • Proven expertise in mobile performance optimization, including startup time, rendering, memory management, and responsiveness
  • Experience implementing and optimizing caching and networking solutions
  • Strong understanding of platform engineering principles and scalable mobile architectures
  • Experience with application profiling, diagnostics, monitoring, and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of mobile security, privacy, and accessibility best practices
  • Ability to quickly navigate and contribute within large, complex codebases
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on a dedicated Mobile Platform Engineering team
  • Experience supporting Android applications used by millions of customers
  • Expertise with Android performance profiling and analysis tools
  • Experience improving build systems, release pipelines, and CI/CD processes
  • Knowledge of modular Android architectures
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, governance, and best practices
  • Exposure to SDK evaluation, implementation, and lifecycle management
