Outpatient Coding Auditor

Hourly Rate: $35.00 – $45.00 per hour

Location: Remote

Position Summary

As an Outpatient Coding Auditor, you will support healthcare organizations by ensuring accurate, compliant, and high-quality outpatient coding through detailed chart audits and coding reviews. This role works closely with coding professionals to maintain regulatory compliance, improve coding accuracy, and provide education on coding best practices. Key Duties

  • Perform quality reviews of outpatient coders to ensure compliance with coding guidelines, payer regulations, and company policies.
  • Assign and sequence ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG (when applicable), and CPT/HCPCS codes through review of medical documentation and diagnostic results.
  • Review physician documentation for coding accuracy, completeness, and compliance with coding guidelines.
  • Provide coding education and feedback to coders and providers as requested.
  • Utilize electronic medical records (EMR), encoder software, and computer-assisted coding (CAC) technology to perform coding audits.

Requirements

Education

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field

Licenses & Certifications

  • Required: Active AHIMA or AAPC Coding Certification (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or equivalent)

Skills

  • Minimum of five (5) years of outpatient facility auditing experience.
  • Recent experience auditing highly complex outpatient charts within a large health system.
  • Experience coding for large academic medical centers or Level I Trauma Centers strongly preferred.
  • Experience working remotely in a production and quality-driven environment.
  • U.S.-based coding and auditing experience required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience using multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS coding guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
