Job Description

Position Overview:

This position is for a Senior Geotechnical Field Engineer to provide full-time field support during extensive earthworks operations and foundation work at the Cheyenne Power Hub Project site near Cheyenne, WY. The successful candidate will report functionally to the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) Group Supervisor or their designee and will coordinate with the project field engineering and construction team for day-to-day activities. This individual is expected to be able to work independently but will receive technical supervision and functional oversight as needed. The successful candidate will be required to coordinate work tasks with other engineering disciplines, particularly CSA, Construction and ES&H functions and the project management team. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. This role will specifically support the Cheyenne Power Hub Project. The selected candidate will be based at the project site for an anticipated period of about one year. This role is a field-based position. The selected candidate may be required to travel to Bechtel and client offices as needed.

 

Responsibilities:

This role will support the full-time earthworks operations at the project site. Other responsibilities may include oversight of geotechnical investigations, input to geotechnical engineering designs and specifications, review of engineering calculations and preparation of geotechnical studies in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The work will require tracking scope of work, schedule, and budgets and coordinating with other technical and construction disciplines in a team environment. Specific tasks include (but not limited to):

  • On-site technical supervision/oversight of earthworks construction activities.

  • Implementation of project engineering specification and drawing requirements.

  • Identify construction issues or deviations early and coordinate corrective actions with Construction, subcontractors, and G&HES home-office engineering.

  • Proof rolling observations.

  • Providing input to technical memos, reports, etc.

  • Review vendor submittals and integrate information into the design/construction solutions.

  • Review field and laboratory test results and coordinate any required remediation with engineering and Construction.

  • Execute to schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work product.

  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.

  • Attending meetings.

  • Preparation of daily field reports, maintain field documentation, inspection records, nonconformance reports (NCRs), and quality records.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or other related Engineering discipline from an accredited university or college with minimum 8 years of progressive related experience in the field.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of earthworks with an emphasis in cold weather earth work best practices.

  • Proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of site and subsurface investigation, foundation design and analysis, and earthwork.

  • Knowledge of industry guides, codes, and standards.

  • Strong coordination and communication skills (verbal and written), with ability to work effectively and professionally in a construction environment.

  • Experience with geotechnical software, Microsoft office programs, and other common computer programs.

  • Demonstrable previous experience working on earthworks for a large-scale project.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Geotechnical Professional Engineer (P.E.) or equivalent.

  • Related experience in geotechnics applied to earthworks design and construction.

  • Knowledge of relevant geotechnical software and computational tools.
