Staff AI Engineer

We deploy on customer terms: SaaS multi-tenant, SaaS single-tenant, and on-premises, across AWS, Azure, and GCP. Our customers are Fortune 500 finance teams who require data isolation, auditability, and compliance.

The Role

The Staff AI Engineer at MeeruAI owns the AI and intelligence layer, from per-customer machine learning models to the LLM and agentic systems that produce grounded natural-language output.

Our output sits next to externally reported financials, so sounding plausible is not good enough. Everything the AI produces must be grounded in, and traceable to, verified data. Grounding is a gate, not a tuning goal: machine learning surfaces and prioritizes, and generated text states only what verified data supports or a human has confirmed.

This is a senior, hands-on role. You set technical direction for the AI layer, partner with the evaluation engineer to make quality measurable, and turn user feedback into durable improvements. Everything runs inside customer clouds on managed LLMs, so customer data never leaves their environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Own per-customer machine learning. Models that learn each customer’s normal versus anomalous behavior and prioritize what deserves attention, built on statistical baselines and learned models over time-series and operational data, with strict anti-leakage discipline.
• Build grounded generation. A template-first natural-language layer grounded in verified data, using guardrails and structured output to prevent unsupported statements, and asking targeted questions only where context is genuinely missing.
• Design agentic orchestration. LangGraph or similar flows with explicit verification and human-confirmation checkpoints, running on managed LLMs inside the customer’s cloud (Bedrock, Vertex, or Azure OpenAI).
• Make quality measurable. Partner with the evaluation engineer to gate grounding, hallucination, and faithfulness in CI, and keep a clean line between learning from feedback and statistical-fit retraining.
• Lead technically. Set direction for the AI layer, mentor engineers, and partner with backend, data, and product.

• Staff-level applied ML and AI. Production systems across classical ML (time-series, anomaly detection, gradient-boosted models such as LightGBM or XGBoost) and modern LLM patterns (RAG, tool use and agents, structured output).
• Clarity on what ML can claim. You know what a model can and cannot legitimately assert, and why that matters in a high-stakes domain.
• Rigor on evaluation and grounding. Demonstrated hallucination control and evaluation practice for LLM systems.
• Real software engineering. Robust, tested Python services, not notebooks.
• Discipline around data leakage. Honest model evaluation as a habit.

Nice-to-Have

• Finance or accounting domain. Experience with financial data or reporting.
• Feature attribution. Literacy with methods such as SHAP, and a clear understanding of their limits.
• Human-in-the-loop systems. Feedback loops that turn user corrections into improvements.
• Managed LLMs in-VPC. Bedrock, Vertex, or Azure OpenAI.
• Sparse-event modeling. Zero-inflated or sparse-event problems.
