Job Description

Sr. Ruby on Rails Engineer

Quick Summary

Our client is seeking a senior-level Ruby on Rails Engineer to build and support complex eCommerce integrations across Shopify and third-party platforms. This is a hands-on, client-facing role focused on asynchronous processing, event-driven architecture, APIs, and system integrations, with the expectation that this person can recommend solutions, translate client needs into actionable development work, and independently support multiple client environments.

Daily Tasks & Key Responsibilities

Primary responsibility: Design, build, and support scalable eCommerce integrations using Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Shopify, and asynchronous processing technologies.

  • Design, build, enhance, and maintain Ruby on Rails applications and services supporting eCommerce and business workflows.
  • Work directly with clients to understand technical needs, evaluate options, and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Translate client requests into Jira tickets, technical tasks, and implementation plans.
  • Remain hands-on with development while also delegating work and helping coordinate technical execution.
  • Build and support integrations between Shopify and external systems including PIM, OMS, WMS, ERP, inventory-management, and payment platforms.
  • Develop Shopify custom applications, extensions, functions, webhooks, and API integrations.
  • Build asynchronous processing workflows using Sidekiq, Resque, Delayed Job, or similar background-job frameworks.
  • Design and support event-driven architectures using technologies such as AWS SQS/SNS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or comparable messaging platforms.
  • Develop and integrate RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
  • Troubleshoot complex distributed-system issues including failed background jobs, race conditions, integration failures, and data consistency problems.
  • Work with PostgreSQL, MySQL, and other relational databases, including query optimization.
  • Participate in code reviews and write clean, maintainable, well-tested production code.
  • Collaborate with Product, QA, DevOps, and other engineering teams.
  • Monitor production integrations and improve system scalability, reliability, and fault tolerance.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including architecture diagrams, data flows, and API contracts.
  • Support multiple concurrent eCommerce clients and independently prioritize technical needs and deliverables.
  • Proactively suggest alternative technical approaches when a client's initial request may not be the best solution.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional Ruby on Rails development experience.
  • Strong professional Node.js development experience.
  • Hands-on experience with asynchronous and background processing technologies such as Sidekiq, Resque, Delayed Job, or similar.
  • Experience with message queues or messaging technologies such as AWS SQS/SNS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar.
  • Strong hands-on Shopify experience, including API integrations, custom app development, Shopify extensions, Shopify Functions, webhooks, or Shopify Plus.
  • Significant eCommerce integration experience across multiple implementations or client environments.
  • Experience integrating eCommerce platforms with systems such as PIM, OMS, WMS, ERP, payment, inventory-management, or other third-party platforms.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful and/or GraphQL API design and integration patterns.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Working knowledge of event-driven architecture and webhook-based integrations.
  • Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills within distributed, multi-service environments.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and development tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with limited oversight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PHP development experience.
  • Production experience with AWS, particularly SQS and SNS.
  • Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with additional eCommerce platforms such as BigCommerce, Magento/Adobe Commerce, or WooCommerce.
  • Docker/containerization experience.
  • Experience with AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure.
  • Microservices architecture experience.
  • Client-facing consulting, professional services, or agency experience.
  • Experience supporting multiple client accounts simultaneously.
  • Experience creating technical architecture diagrams and integration documentation.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools or AI-enabled software initiatives.
