Quick overview
Job description
Engineering Manager
The Role
Enterprise healthcare is where clinical AI has to prove it can be trusted at scale. Hospitals and large health networks are now choosing Lyrebird, and that brings harder demands around reliability, security, integrations and delivery commitments. You’ll lead our Enterprise Engineering team in Melbourne, define what great looks like for enterprise delivery, and own what ships and the quality bar it’s built to. Your job is to shape an enterprise product on strong engineering foundations so that it wins by default.
This role suits a strong IC who has grown into a proven leader and still enjoys being close to the code. You’ll spend around 20% of your time on the tools in code review, architecture and unblocking. The rest goes on deciding which problems are worth solving, setting the direction, and making sure your team knows the goal, why it matters and what can wait.
There will always be 20 things on fire. You see around corners, pick the one that matters, and tell your team plainly: that fire will keep burning, but right now we’re focusing on this. You manage up with confidence, challenge assumptions when priorities shift for no good reason, and filter the noise so your team doesn’t carry it.
About Us
Every day in Australia, 10 people die from preventable medical errors. They don’t die from incurable diseases. They die from misdiagnosis, missed information, and clinicians making decisions under impossible pressure. At the centre of that failure is a doctor spending 40% of their day on paperwork instead of patients. Lyrebird is fixing that.
We turn real clinical conversations into accurate notes, automatically. From there, Lyrebird takes on the admin that follows: letters and documents, workflow automation, patient data pulled together from disconnected systems, and communication with patients and other clinicians.
Thousands of clinicians across multiple disciplines use Lyrebird every day in environments where accuracy, safety and time matter deeply. We’re growing fast across Melbourne, the UK and Asia, and there’s a short window right now to set the standard for clinical AI in Australia before anyone else does.
What you’ll do
Define the enterprise engineering roadmap with Product and the Head of Engineering, and own delivery against it so milestones land on the dates we commit to customers
Shape the foundations enterprise customers need, including reliability, security, scalability and integrations, and make the case to the business for what gets built first
Turn shifting executive strategy into one clear, prioritised plan, including what we’re deliberately not doing yet, and hold the line on it
Challenge ideas with technical depth, your team’s, Product’s and leadership’s, and course correct early instead of after the fact
Build a team that carries the delivery load, through clear expectations, strong delegation and ownership that sits with the people closest to the work
Act as the bridge between exec and engineering, setting trade-offs with Product, Customer Success and Sales and pushing back where it counts
Shape how enterprise work strengthens the wider platform, working with senior technical leaders, the UK engineering team and other product squads
What you’ll bring
A background as a strong hands-on engineer, with enough technical depth to lead architecture and code review conversations, not just follow them
A track record of leading an engineering team that shipped meaningful product under pressure and through constantly shifting priorities (experience in high-growth start ups will hold you in good stead)
Proven ability to drive measurable results through engineering output that directly impact the customer and ultimately, ARR
Experience building or scaling a product for enterprise customers, where reliability, security and delivery commitments carry real weight
Proven ability to set direction across competing stakeholders, turning conflicting demands into an agreed plan that the business backs
A product mindset: you question why something is being built and what the customer outcome is, not just how to ship the ticket
Nice to have
Experience in healthcare, health tech or another regulated industry
Exposure to clinical system integrations such as EMRs, HL7 or FHIR
Experience leading teams across time zones, especially Australia and the UK
Experience shipping AI or ML powered products in production
Every enterprise deal we win puts Lyrebird in front of more clinicians, which means more doctors with time back for their patients and fewer decisions made under impossible pressure. The team you lead will decide how fast that happens and how much it can be trusted. If you care about real impact, move with urgency and say the difficult thing directly, this is where your work counts.
We’re building a team that reflects the diversity of the people who benefit from our work. We want Lyrebird to be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and able to thrive. If you’re from an underrepresented background in tech, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don’t meet every requirement.
