The ideal candidate has 2+ years of software development experience, a solid foundation in Java and modern web development, and an interest in building and modernizing mission-critical applications in an Azure cloud environment. The candidate should be comfortable working collaboratively within an Agile development team and learning new technologies and development practices. This position provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced architects and developers while contributing directly to the modernization of a large-scale, mission-critical public health system.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack application features using Java, React, and RESTful APIs.
  • Develop and maintain React-based micro frontends and Java-based microservices in an Azure cloud environment.
  • Support the modernization of legacy applications to modern microservices and micro frontend architectures.
  • Develop new application functionality and resolve software defects throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain unit and integration tests and support increased use of automated testing.
  • Participate in code reviews and follow established software development, security, testing, and documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with Business Analysts, QA engineers, architects, technical leads, and other developers to understand requirements and ensure accurate implementation.
  • Troubleshoot application, configuration, integration, and deployment issues across development and test environments.
  • Support application deployments to pre-production and production environments.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for application features, interfaces, and configurations.
  • Participate in Agile activities including daily team meetings, backlog refinement, planning, demonstrations, and retrospectives, as applicable.
  • Participate in modernization and technical knowledge-sharing activities across the development team.
  • Follow architectural and technical guidance and contribute to continuous improvement of development practices.
  • Use approved AI-assisted development tools to support software development, testing, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline and 2+ years of relevant software development experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of hands-on Java development experience with Java 17+ and React.
  • Experience developing or consuming RESTful APIs.
  • Experience developing applications in a cloud environment, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Understanding of microservices architectures and modern application development principles.
  • Experience with relational databases, such as Azure SQL.
  • Experience with source control, code reviews, build processes, and software development tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, or comparable tools.
  • Experience developing and executing unit tests using JUnit or comparable testing frameworks.
  • Experience working within an Agile software development environment, such as Kanban, Scrum, or SAFe.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a cross-functional development team.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to changing customer and technical requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure DevOps and GitHub, including Azure Boards, Repos, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience developing and deploying containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Experience with micro frontend architectures.
  • Experience with KendoReact and Quarkus.
  • Experience modernizing or migrating legacy applications to microservices and/or cloud-native architectures.
  • Experience with OAuth 2.0 or other modern authentication and authorization technologies.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software development tools.
  • Familiarity with healthcare IT concepts, terminology, interoperability standards, and/or HL7 FHIR.
  • Previous experience supporting CDC, NHSN, or other federal healthcare applications.
