SQL Database Administrator

Description
Robert Half is currently looking for a SQL DBA to support and optimize a highly available hosted infrastructure environment for our client in the Milwaukee area. This person will be responsible for the administration, performance, security, and reliability of Microsoft SQL Server platforms that support both internal business systems and customer-facing applications.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, automation, performance tuning, and ensuring critical database environments remain stable and secure.
This position is open to remote employees located within Wisconsin. Candidates outside of Wisconsin are not eligible for remote consideration.
What You'll Be Doing

• Administer SQL Server environments across production, development, and test systems
• Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server instances
• Monitor database performance and proactively identify opportunities for optimization
• Perform routine maintenance including indexing, integrity checks, and capacity planning
• Design and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes
• Support high-availability and business continuity initiatives
• Manage database security, permissions, and access controls
• Troubleshoot database, application, and infrastructure-related issues
• Develop automation and operational efficiencies using PowerShell, T-SQL, or similar scripting tools
• Partner with infrastructure and application teams to support business-critical systems
• Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures
• Participate in an on-call rotation supporting production environments

Requirements

• 3+ years of SQL Server administration experience in an enterprise, hosting, cloud, or managed services environment
• Strong understanding of SQL Server installation, configuration, patching, maintenance, and troubleshooting
• Experience with backup and recovery strategies, disaster recovery planning, and high-availability technologies
• Hands-on experience with performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, and resource management
• Working knowledge of Windows Server environments
• Experience with PowerShell, T-SQL, or other automation and scripting tools
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
• Excellent communication and documentation skills

Nice to Have

• Experience supporting hosted, private cloud, or managed infrastructure environments
• Exposure to Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud database technologies
• Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, or other virtualization platforms
• Familiarity with replication, clustering, and enterprise backup solutions
• Experience supporting ERP systems or other SQL-driven business applications
• Understanding of IT service management processes and best practices
