Assistant Project Manager – Substations / Heavy Industry - 12 MONTH CONTRACT
Our client is looking for an Assistant Project Manager for a 12 month contract opportunity to support the delivery of major Utilities Infrastructure projects in Scotland.
The role will require regular travel between project sites, offices and client locations across Scotland, supporting Project Managers with the coordination of site activities, subcontractors, programme, commercial requirements and project documentation.
This opportunity would suit someone with 3–5 years' project experience who is looking to develop their career within Project Management. Previous experience within HV substations, power infrastructure, utilities, heavy engineering or heavy industrial projects would be highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Project Delivery – Assist the Project Manager with the day-to-day delivery of substation and infrastructure projects, ensuring activities remain on programme and aligned with project requirements.
- Coordinate Substation Works – Support the coordination of substation construction, upgrades, refurbishment and associated electrical/civil works.
- Safety & Quality – Support project HSE and quality requirements, ensuring site activities are carried out in accordance with company, client and regulatory standards.
- Manage Site Activities – Work closely with site teams, engineers and subcontractors to coordinate daily activities and resolve project delivery issues.
- Programme Management – Assist with project programmes, milestones, look-ahead schedules and progress tracking, identifying potential delays or risks.
- Contractor Coordination – Support the management of subcontractors, suppliers and specialist contractors across different project work packages.
- Procurement & Materials – Assist with procurement requirements, material schedules, supplier coordination and tracking of equipment required for project delivery.
- Commercial Support – Support project cost tracking, variations, forecasts, purchase orders and other commercial activities alongside the Project Manager and commercial team.
- Engineering Interfaces – Coordinate with design, engineering, construction and commissioning teams to ensure information is available when required.
- Project Controls & Documentation – Maintain accurate project documentation, progress reports, trackers, meeting actions, programmes and project records.
- Client & Stakeholder Communication – Attend project meetings and maintain effective communication with clients, contractors, engineering teams and other stakeholders.
- Risk Management – Assist with identifying and managing project risks, constraints and delivery issues, escalating where appropriate.
- Participate in regular project reviews, providing updates across programme, safety, cost, quality, risk and delivery performance.
Requirements:
- 3–5 years' experience within project delivery, project engineering, construction or an Assistant Project Manager position.
- Previous experience within HV Substations, Power, Energy Infrastructure, Utilities, Heavy Engineering or Heavy Industrial projects.
- Exposure to substation construction, upgrades, refurbishment or major electrical infrastructure would be highly desirable.
- Understanding of project delivery from design and procurement through construction, commissioning and handover.
- Experience coordinating contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
- Good understanding of construction site activities and project delivery processes.
- Understanding of HSE, RAMS, CDM and safe systems of work.
- Some exposure to project budgets, cost tracking, variations, procurement and programme management.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple project activities and priorities.
- Confident communicator capable of working with clients, engineers, contractors and senior project personnel.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and project management systems.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly across Scotland.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
