Job Description

Position: Senior API Engineer – Azure

Location: Remote (USA)

Rate: $55 - $59 per hour on C2C

Role Overview

The Senior API Engineer will be responsible for building and supporting scalable, secure, and high-performance APIs on Microsoft Azure. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Azure API Management, Azure Functions, cloud networking, security, infrastructure automation, and CI/CD practices. Experience with MuleSoft and AI-assisted development tools is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deploy, secure, and support enterprise-scale REST APIs on Azure.
  • Build API solutions using Azure API Management (APIM), Azure Functions, App Services, and related Azure services.
  • Create and maintain OpenAPI/Swagger specifications while adhering to API design, versioning, and documentation standards.
  • Implement API security using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, Microsoft Entra ID, Managed Identities, and Azure Key Vault.
  • Apply Azure networking best practices, including VNets, Private Endpoints, NSGs, Firewalls, and private connectivity.
  • Configure API gateway policies such as authentication, routing, caching, throttling, rate limiting, and logging.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Actions.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Bicep, Terraform, ARM Templates, or similar technologies.
  • Establish monitoring, diagnostics, and alerting using Azure Monitor and Application Insights.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, troubleshooting, and development of API engineering standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong software engineering experience focused on API and integration development.
  • Proven experience building and hosting production-grade APIs on Microsoft Azure.
  • Hands-on expertise with Azure API Management (APIM), Azure Functions, and Azure cloud services.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful API design principles and OpenAPI/Swagger standards.
  • Experience implementing secure API authentication and authorization frameworks.
  • Solid knowledge of Azure networking, security, governance, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Experience building automated CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting, production support, testing, and monitoring experience.
  • Proficiency with Git and modern DevOps/DevSecOps practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MuleSoft Anypoint Platform, API-led connectivity, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Experience integrating MuleSoft with Azure-based APIs and services.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture using Azure Service Bus and Event Grid.
  • Experience with containers and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Exposure to AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot for code generation, testing, documentation, and automation.
  • Microsoft Azure certifications are preferred.
