Safety Specialist– Care Campus

Background

Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs.  The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Safety Specialist supports day-to-day participant and site safety throughout the Care Campus, including the courtyard, entrances, common areas, service areas, and designated perimeter areas such as Crocker Street.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Maintain a consistent, visible presence and monitor assigned areas for safety concerns, participants in distress, and environmental hazards.
• Engage participants respectfully using trauma-informed, person-centered, and nonjudgmental approaches.
• Use trained de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques and request additional support when a situation exceeds the role’s scope.
• Respond within training to safety incidents, behavioral health crises, medical emergencies, and suspected overdoses, and complete required documentation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & SCHEDULE

Highly active and visible role with frequent walking and standing indoors and outside. Day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be assigned based on campus needs.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• Previous experience in homeless services, behavioral health, social services, safety, security, crisis response, outreach, residential services, or another participant-facing setting preferred.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or other complex needs strongly preferred.
• Experience with de-escalation, harm reduction, crisis response, or emergency response preferred.
• Strong communication, teamwork, conflict-resolution, situational awareness, and ability to follow established safety procedures.

Work Environment

Regular use of a computer and HR technology platforms is required, along with the ability to manage detailed records and sustained periods of screen-based work. The role follows a hybrid work arrangement with regular onsite presence and occasional travel among Los Angeles-area locations.
