The German Shepherd Dog Association (SV) e. V. was founded in 1899 and, with approximately 50,000 members and 1,800 local chapters throughout Germany, is the world's largest purebred dog breeding association. The founder, Max von Stephanitz, envisioned creating a capable, confident, and well-balanced dog—an idea that has evolved into an international success story on four paws. As a result, the German Shepherd ranks unchallenged at the top of the popularity list for all purebred dogs in many countries.

The club is a member of the German Kennel Club (VDH), the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), and the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Clubs (WUSV).
