Equipment Risk Group Manager

Job Description:

Direct and coordinate the activities and manage all personnel of the Research Group functioning within a broad discipline of loss prevention related research and facilities management in support of the Area Director.  Based on value added to the company, identify and manage the generation of fundamental knowledge, engineering data, analysis methods and results, and numerical and physical tools that provide timely transfer of state-of-the-art hazard and risk assessments and cost-effective loss prevention and loss control solutions and/or facilities management. Provide technical leadership and support, through the application of expertise and the development and leadership of the teams within their group, to Operations, Engineering, Approvals, Underwriting, Public Relations, and external entities including clients, industry groups and other stakeholders to promote and support the Factory Mutual (FM) business model. Maintain international leadership, recognition and credibility within their field of loss prevention research.

Key Responsibilities

• Define staff and provide technical, organizational, and team leadership to ensure the research portfolio within their group, including all programs and projects, meet the strategic objectives and business requirements of the Research Area and FM in a timely and cost-effective manner.
• Provides key input to Area Director to ensure collaboration and coordination and to foster effective use of resources and personnel for cohesive and strategic progress in research across entire Area and between Areas and groups as appropriate.
• Serve as an example of leadership and develop leadership skills of Technical Team Leaders/Managers to improve quality, efficiency, relevancy, and morale of all staff in the group.
• Ensure the scope and technical rigor of all work in the group is fit for purpose, including development of a line-of-sight to implementation and added value to FM business units, prioritization of workload, timeliness of completion, and quality assurance including suitable technical review(s).
• Develop and maintain a competent and motivated staff that serves as experts in their field.
• Maintain and continuously improve a culture of innovation that encourages staff to provide new, creative solutions, processes or techniques that benefit the business.  Should champion artificial intelligence (AI) tool usage within group.
• Ensure personnel, equipment, and space assigned to the Research Group are effectively and safely utilized. Seek and act on opportunities to leverage resources and improve efficiency.
• Serve as a vital management resource for their technical discipline, building productive and positive relationships with clients, Operations, Engineering, Underwriting, industry groups and stakeholder organizations.
• Ensure a current awareness of relevant technological advances and academic and research activities worldwide in the discipline of their group; enhance and defend FM's position in technical areas, seek opportunities, under the guidance of the Area Director, to influence the direction of the technical community.
• Oversee Group planning and budget process to meet goals and resource limitations.
• Provide Area Director with appropriate progress, status, and planning information.
• In addition to team management responsibilities, work as individual contributor and serve as role model to team on projects that support critical FM business initiatives with challenging technical content.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and 7 years (min) of related experience.

• M.S. in Electrical Engineering and 10 years (min) of related experience.

• Engineering/research in specialized area of expertise commanding industry recognition or leading to publication as senior author of original works in peer-reviewed journals and national recognition as an expert in the special area of expertise.
• Extensive experience with experiments, measurements, and computational tools (both commercial and in-house) supporting research projects.
• Research experience in power-generation equipment such as gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, transformers, motors, switchgear, distribution lines, photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), capacitor back-up units (CBU), or nuclear energy.
• Research experience with dynamic electrical systems including design and operation optimization, reliability, and prognostic health monitoring.
• Demonstrated capability to conceive, develop, conduct and implement research/project plans for technically complex problems with multiple objectives.
• Risk management, risk consulting, property insurance, facilities management experience that provides the basis for technical/business decisions.
• First line supervision of research personnel
• Project management (personnel, tasks, budget, schedule), including familiarity with computerized tools.
