Rust Software Engineer

The Opportunity

StaffRight Associates is recruiting for a mid-level Rust Software Engineer to create and fine-tune high-performance software that powers simulation, optimization and decision-support capabilities in mission-driven settings. This is an on-site role in Reston, VA.

Working within an extensive production Rust codebase, the Rust Software Engineer will partner with researchers and fellow engineers to transform complex algorithms and research into dependable, fast software. The work spans the backend, the data layer, front-end applications and the infrastructure behind them, so it suits an engineer who loves tough technical problems and wants to see research become fielded capability.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain production software within an extensive Rust codebase
  • Architect and tune performance-sensitive algorithms and compute-heavy workloads
  • Create backend services with Axum, Tokio and related frameworks
  • Connect software to APIs, databases, front-end applications and infrastructure
  • Partner with end users, researchers and engineers to turn complex technical ideas into practical software
  • Mature research-born capabilities into production systems that scale and remain easy to maintain

What You Bring

Required

  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Active Secret Security Clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related technical field
  • 3+ years engineering software professionally
  • Deep experience shipping performance-critical, production-quality Rust code
  • Experience building Backend Services with Axum or comparable frameworks
  • Hands-on Asynchronous Programming experience, ideally with Tokio
  • Solid Software Engineering Fundamentals and Problem Solving abilities
  • Exposure across the stack through Full Stack Development, including familiarity with Web Application Development
  • Effective Cross-Functional Collaboration with end users, researchers and engineering peers

Preferred

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance

Compensation & Total Rewards

  • Salary: $125,000-$175,000
