Job Description The Navy Integrated Training Environment (NITE) Network Administrator / Ship Rider is responsible for the administration, maintenance, cybersecurity defense, and operational support of Navy Enterprise Tactical Training Network (NETTN) client and server systems supporting enterprise-wide modeling and simulation applications for the NITE. This role provides both shore-based and shipboard support. As a Ship Rider, the candidate will embark on U.S. Navy vessels to provide onboard network administration and technical support during underway operations. Deployments may require extended 12+ hour workdays for periods ranging from several weeks to over a month. The candidate must be capable of troubleshooting connectivity issues, accessing and configuring network switches via console connections, and maintaining reliable system operations in dynamic shipboard environments with limited resources. The Network Administrator will coordinate closely with team members, Navy personnel, and technical departments to update, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot servers, workstations, and network systems both ashore and afloat. Additional responsibilities include virtual environment administration, DHCP configuration, patching and STIG implementation, system hardening, technical troubleshooting, authoring SOPs, and providing Tier 2 technical support. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, manage multiple mission priorities, and maintain high-quality technical support during extended deployments. Essential Job Responsibilities • Provides administration and maintenance of NETTN client and server infrastructure supporting NITE training operations. • Embarks on naval vessels as a Ship Rider to provide onboard network and system support during underway operations. • Troubleshoots shipboard connectivity issues, including phone communication and console access to switches for diagnostics and configuration. • Performs enterprise patching, STIG implementation, and system hardening for compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements. • Supports servers, workstations, VMware virtual environments, and network systems across shore and shipboard installations. • Creates and modifies DHCP reservations and assists with virtual environment configuration. • Authors technical documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs). • Provides Tier 2 technical support and escalates issues as appropriate. • Works independently to manage competing mission and operational priorities. • Maintains operational readiness and technical performance during extended deployments. Minimum Qualifications • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.
- Security+ or equivalent DoD 8570 certification.
- Must currently hold or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Must be willing and able to deploy aboard Navy vessels for extended periods.
- Ability to work 12+ hour shifts for weeks at a time, including underway periods lasting a month or longer. • Experience with Cisco networking and switch administration.
- Experience with Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP.
- Working knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7/8.
- Experience maintaining VMware vSphere 7/8 and VMware Horizon environments.
- Experience patching ESXi 7/8 hosts.
- Strong understanding of VMware virtualization technologies.
- Familiarity with VDI technologies and associated protocols.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues across multiple operating systems and platforms.
- Strong customer service focus and ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to perform effectively in shipboard environments with limited resources.
- Ability to maintain operational focus during extended deployments.
- Adaptability to changing mission requirements and dynamic operational conditions. Preferred Requirements • Server-focused experience highly desired.
- Linux+ or Microsoft certification preferred.
