Director of Accounting

Description
We are looking for a strategic accounting leader to establish and oversee a high-performing upstream accounting function in Dallas, Texas. This role will guide core accounting activities for producer clients across production, revenue, reporting, and compliance while serving as a trusted partner to both customers and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings deep oil and gas accounting expertise, strong operational judgment, and the ability to build scalable processes and teams in a growing environment.
Responsibilities:
• Build and direct the upstream accounting organization, creating a strong operating framework to support current needs and future expansion.
• Oversee critical accounting functions related to joint interest billing, production accounting, revenue accounting, and regulatory reporting for producer customers.
• Lead the monthly close cycle, ensuring accurate results, timely completion, and effective coordination across accounting activities.
• Examine lease operating statements and other supporting records to confirm accuracy, completeness, and alignment with contractual obligations.
• Prepare and deliver recurring client reporting packages that provide clear, reliable financial and operational information.
• Design and implement internal processes, controls, and governance standards that support quality, consistency, and compliance.
• Collaborate closely with operations, marketing, finance, and customer contacts to resolve issues, improve workflows, and support business objectives.
• Build, mentor, and develop a growing accounting team, starting with a small direct staff and scaling the function as the business expands.
• Support system and process enhancements tied to accounting operations when needed, including the effective use of platforms such as SAP, BlackLine, and related tools.
Requirements
• 7+ years of accounting experience, with significant depth in upstream oil and gas environments.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing accounting teams and driving performance in a client-focused setting.
• Strong background in joint interest billing, revenue accounting, production accounting, and month-end close activities.
• Experience with regulatory and financial reporting, including support for audits and financial statement accuracy.
• Knowledge of lease operating statements, joint venture reporting, and other upstream accounting deliverables.
• Proficiency with accounting systems and tools such as SAP and BlackLine.
• CPA designation is preferred.
• Operator-side industry experience is highly valued and may be considered in place of certain system-specific experience.
