Job Description
Safety Specialist
Introduction:
The Safety Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of construction activities on various projects. They will conduct inspections, audits, investigations, and provide mentorship to project personnel to promote a proactive safety culture.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine and comprehensive inspections of construction activities to verify compliance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, and project-specific safety plans.
- Monitor contractor adherence to approved Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Safe Work Plans.
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and ensure timely corrective actions are implemented.
- Perform daily safety walkthroughs of active construction work areas.
- Conduct documented safety audits of contractors, subcontractors, equipment, and work operations.
- Participate in investigations involving incidents, near misses, property damage events, and safety concerns.
- Review contractor safety documentation and daily pre-task plans.
- Prepare daily safety reports documenting observations, inspections, audits, incidents, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of safety meetings, inspections, training verification, and compliance activities.
- Develop field reports and communicate findings to project leadership and client representatives.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through mentoring, coaching, and engagement with project personnel.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible construction safety experience.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926).
- Experience supporting large construction, infrastructure, utility, transportation, industrial, or facility projects.
- Experience conducting safety audits, investigations, and compliance inspections.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic safety management systems.
- Valid driver's license and ability to access project sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
- OSHA 500, OSHA 510, CHST, CSP, ASP, CSHO, or equivalent professional safety certification.
- Experience with owner-led construction management programs.
- Knowledge of environmental compliance and industrial hygiene practices.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
