Role Summary

We are seeking a Java Tech Lead to lead the architecture, development, and delivery of cloud-native backend services within a modern AWS environment. This is a true player-coach role that combines hands-on software engineering with people leadership responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced engineering leader who can architect scalable microservices, make strategic cloud decisions, mentor developers, and partner closely with Product, Architecture, QA, DevOps, and business stakeholders. This individual will be responsible for both technical execution and the growth and development of their engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Own the architecture and technical roadmap for Java-based applications and services

• Design and develop secure, scalable, and resilient microservices using Java and Spring Boot

• Write production-level code for critical initiatives and complex technical challenges

• Lead architecture reviews, code reviews, and software design discussions

• Drive cloud architecture decisions across AWS infrastructure, data platforms, messaging services, and networking components

• Establish and maintain engineering standards for code quality, testing, reliability, and security

• Lead observability, monitoring, incident management, and operational excellence initiatives

• Drive CI/CD automation and Infrastructure as Code best practices

Team Leadership

• Manage and mentor software engineers through regular coaching and career development discussions

• Conduct performance reviews, goal-setting, and growth planning

• Support team members through technical guidance, code reviews, and collaborative problem solving

• Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning

• Identify performance concerns early and provide clear, constructive feedback

Delivery & Collaboration

• Partner with Product Managers, Architects, Security teams, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions

• Collaborate across QA, DevOps, Platform, and Engineering teams to manage dependencies and integrations

• Lead Agile delivery processes including sprint planning, estimation, prioritization, and release management

• Communicate project status, technical risks, architecture decisions, and tradeoffs to leadership

• Ensure predictable execution and high-quality software delivery

Key Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience

• 7+ years of backend Java development experience

• 2+ years of direct people management experience including performance reviews, coaching, and career development

• Expert-level knowledge of Java 17+ and Spring Boot

• Strong experience building REST APIs using Spring Data and Spring Security

• 3+ years of hands-on AWS architecture and development experience

• Experience with AWS services including ECS, EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, SQS, CloudWatch, and IAM

• Strong understanding of microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and resiliency patterns

• Experience with both relational and NoSQL databases including PostgreSQL, Oracle, and DynamoDB

• Strong data modeling and performance tuning experience

• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, and containerized application architectures

• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar platforms

• Strong testing experience utilizing JUnit, Mockito, and automated testing frameworks

• Proven ability to deliver large-scale enterprise software projects from design through production deployment

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• AWS Solutions Architect or AWS Developer certifications

• Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK

• Experience with Kafka, Amazon MSK, Kinesis, or event streaming platforms

• Experience with observability tools such as New Relic, Datadog, Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry

• Background modernizing monolithic applications into microservices architectures

• Experience leading cloud migration and AWS transformation initiatives

• Retail, Ecommerce, Payments, or high-volume transaction processing experience

• Thrives in fast-paced environments with evolving priorities and multiple stakeholders

Contract Details

• 6-month contract to start with strong extension potential

• Open to C2C candidates

• Five days onsite required
