Job Description
Enterprise Information Architect – Information Model
6- 12 Months contract – extension
Vienna, VA / Open for remote
Job Description:
Summary:
- We are seeking an experienced Information Architect to lead the design of an enterprise information model — the conceptual and logical structures, taxonomies, and ontologies that define how the organization''s business domains, concepts, and their relationships are represented consistently across the enterprise.
- This role is fundamentally about understanding and modeling the business — its domains, entities, concepts, and the relationships between them — and using that model to bring structure and consistency to application development.
- The Information Architect will partner directly with business stakeholders and application development teams to translate business meaning into shared, well-governed models, beginning with a foundational initiative to define the domain model for a new application capability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and ongoing evolution of the Enterprise Information Model (EIM), spanning conceptual and logical layers across multiple business domains.
- Partner with business stakeholders to elicit how they think about and describe their domain, and translate that understanding into formal domain models, entities, and relationships.
- Develop and maintain business domain taxonomies — structured classifications of business concepts, categories, and hierarchies — that give the organization a shared way to organize and navigate its information.
- Define and evolve ontologies that formally represent business concepts, their attributes, and the relationships and rules that connect them, establishing a shared semantic foundation across domains.
- Facilitate domain modeling workshops with business subject matter experts and application development teams to elicit, validate, and reconcile concepts, definitions, and relationships across domains.
- Apply the enterprise information model to active application initiatives, working directly with development teams to shape their domain and data models in alignment with enterprise concepts and definitions.
- Establish and maintain a business glossary of shared definitions, tied to the taxonomy and ontology, to drive consistent terminology across business and technology teams.
- Define modeling standards and conventions — how domains, entities, relationships, and hierarchies should be represented — so that application teams model consistently across the enterprise.
- Collaborate with Data Governance to align the information model with stewardship accountability, business definitions, and governance policy.
- Perform impact analysis for new business initiatives and application efforts, identifying where proposed models overlap, conflict, or introduce redundancy with existing enterprise concepts.
- Mentor application development teams on domain-driven modeling practices, helping embed enterprise thinking into day-to-day solution design.
- Present information model artifacts, standards, and recommendations to architecture review boards and governance forums.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor''s degree in Information Systems, Business, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in information architecture, enterprise data modeling, or business/domain modeling, with a demonstrated focus on the business meaning of data rather than physical implementation.
- Demonstrated experience developing conceptual and logical domain models that span multiple business areas of an enterprise.
- Direct experience developing taxonomies and/or ontologies to represent business concepts, categories, and relationships.
- Strong workshop facilitation skills — comfortable eliciting business language directly from stakeholders and translating it into structured, defensible models.
- Experience partnering directly with application development teams to apply enterprise-level models to specific solution and system designs.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to move fluidly between business and technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with semantic modeling techniques and knowledge graphs as a means of representing enterprise ontologies.
- Experience developing or maintaining a business glossary or enterprise metadata framework.
- Exposure to industry-standard reference data models, particularly within financial services or another regulated industry.
- General awareness of Master Data Management (MDM) concepts as they relate to domain and entity definitions (deep MDM tooling experience is not required).
- Understanding of data governance operating models and how information architecture supports stewardship and accountability.
