We want someone passionate about technical leadership and business development.

As a Principal, you will provide technical and strategic leadership on complex projects involving structural engineering, building/structure investigation, assessment, repair, and rehabilitation. This role combines expertise in structural engineering with aspects of SGH’s Building Technology practice focusing on building enclosures, particularly for projects involving existing buildings, structural performance, forensic investigations, and capital improvements.

Principals lead multidisciplinary teams through the investigation, design, rehabilitation, and construction phases of projects while developing trusted client relationships and identifying opportunities for new and expanded services. In addition to project and client leadership, Principals contribute to firmwide technical excellence by mentoring staff, collaborating across practice areas and offices, and engaging with professional and industry organizations.

The Position:

  • Provide technical leadership on complex structural engineering projects involving new and existing buildings and structures.
  • Lead investigations, assessments, repair, and rehabilitation projects involving structural systems and building enclosure systems, including existing building conditions.
  • Serve as a technical expert and project leader on structural and forensic investigations involving deterioration, distress, failures, collapses, and construction-related issues.
  • Develop practical repair and rehabilitation solutions that consider structural performance, constructability, durability, and long-term building needs.
  • Collaborate with professionals across SGH’s Structural Engineering and Building Technology practices, as well as other technical disciplines, to address complex building challenges.
  • Manage and deliver projects from investigation and assessment through design and construction, including scoping, budgeting, scheduling, client communication, and quality control.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, contractors, attorneys, government agencies, and other industry partners to generate new business opportunities and expand client relationships.
  • Provide leadership for significant capital improvement and rehabilitation programs involving existing building assets.
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level staff, supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Contribute to SGH’s thought leadership through industry organizations, technical publications, presentations, and other professional activities.
  • Promote SGH’s collaborative and ethical culture while helping strengthen the firm’s reputation for technical excellence.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering; advanced degree preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in at least one U.S. state; ability to obtain licensure in Massachusetts.
  • 15+ years of experience in structural engineering, including significant experience with complex building projects, investigations, assessments, repair and rehabilitation, and construction-phase services.
  • Strong technical background in structural engineering with experience working on existing buildings and structures.
  • Experience leading forensic investigations and evaluating structural distress, deterioration, failures, or other performance concerns. Ability to serve as an expert witness.
  • Proven track record of technical and project leadership on complex structural engineering and rehabilitation projects.
  • Demonstrated business development skills and ability to build and maintain lasting client relationships.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and collaborating across technical practice areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical matters clearly to clients and industry audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring staff and advancing technical excellence.
