Job Description

Ready to help protect the safe operation of one of the UK's nuclear power stations? Are you a Nuclear Engineer, Reactor Physicist, Safety Case Engineer, or technical specialist looking to apply your expertise to real-world challenges that directly impact nuclear safety? At EDF, Success is Personal – and with us, your career journey is yours to shape.

We're recruiting for two specialist opportunities within the Nuclear Safety Team at #Hartlepool Power Station:

  • Nuclear Safety Team Member – Reactor Physics
  • Nuclear Safety Team Member – Safety Case Management

Both roles sit within the same Nuclear Safety Group and share a common purpose: ensuring nuclear safety remains our overriding priority.

Each role offers a distinct technical specialism. Our Reactor Physics specialists focus on reactor core behaviour, fuel performance and operational optimisation, while our Safety Case Management specialists provide expert advice on safety case compliance, hazard assessment and nuclear safety requirements.

Working within the team, you'll help maintain the station Safety Case and provide authoritative technical advice that supports the safe, secure and reliable operation of the plant. You'll collaborate with Operations, Engineering and central technical specialists while supporting the UK's transition towards An Electric Britain.

This is a full-time, site-based opportunity at #Hartlepool Power Station. You'll gain hands-on experience in an operational nuclear power station environment, benefit from industry-recognised training, and receive support towards professional registration and chartership while developing expertise across nuclear operations.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Nuclear Safety Team Member – Reactor Physics, you'll:

  • Analyse and interpret plant data to support safe and efficient reactor operation
  • Run reactor physics models and codes to assess reactor core behaviour
  • Support reactor core management, fuel management and fuel performance activities
  • Monitor reactor coolant activity using gamma spectroscopy techniques
  • Provide specialist reactor physics advice that supports plant operation and nuclear safety

As a Nuclear Safety Team Member – Safety Case Management, you'll:

  • Provide advice on Technical Specifications and safety case compliance requirements
  • Assess plant states, hazards and fault scenarios to ensure appropriate safety protections are maintained
  • Support ALARP assessments and safety reviews
  • Author, verify and review safety case documentation, Engineering Changes and safety submissions
  • Provide specialist nuclear safety advice to support operational decision making

Both roles will also:

  • Support the maintenance and implementation of the station Safety Case
  • Work closely with Operations, Engineering and technical specialists
  • Contribute to the safe, secure and reliable generation of electricity
  • Undertake a role within the Station Emergency Response Organisation following appropriate training

Who You Are

We're looking for Nuclear Safety Team Members who are analytical, inquisitive and motivated by solving complex engineering and scientific challenges. Whether you're an aspiring Reactor Physicist or Safety Case Engineer , you'll be keen to apply your technical expertise within an operational nuclear environment. Do you offer?

  • A minimum of a HNC or equivalent qualification, in engineering, physical sciences, mathematics or a related discipline. A degree level qualification in physical sciences, engineering or maths would be an advantage
  • Experience applying scientific, engineering or mathematical principles to solve complex technical problems
  • The ability to interpret technical information and provide clear recommendations
  • Experience producing, reviewing or presenting technical reports or documentation
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly with a range of stakeholders
  • Prior experience of working at an operational nuclear power station or within the nuclear industry would be desirable

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

We are offering a starting salary of between £47,513 and £71,786, with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Nuclear Generation Company Agreement. The starting salary for the appointment will be dependent on your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

Everyone is welcome at EDF; we’re committed to building a workforce that reflects gender balance, social mobility, and inclusion of minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and those with disabilities. As a Disability Confident employer, we will support applicants requiring adjustments.
