Software Engineer - Strategic Engineering, Cyber Security

Location: Sheffield (3 days per week onsite mandatory)

Contract End Date: 22 September 2027

Rate: £411 per day via Umbrella company

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented Software Engineer to join a Strategic Engineering team within Cyber Security. This role is ideal for a strong software engineer who enjoys building production-grade applications, Back End services, APIs, developer tooling, and automation solutions that support enterprise-scale cyber security and data platforms.

This is a software engineering-focused position with significant hands-on development responsibilities. It is not a traditional infrastructure, DevOps, or platform engineering role. The successful candidate will combine strong coding expertise with experience operating services in cloud environments using modern DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices.

Key Responsibilities

Software Engineering

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Back End services, APIs, and engineering tools.
  • Build production-quality software using technologies such as Go, Python, Java, or C#.
  • Apply software engineering best practices including SOLID principles, design patterns, refactoring, and peer code reviews.
  • Develop scalable, maintainable, and highly testable systems and services.
  • Implement automated testing, including unit, integration, and behavioural testing.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to engineering standards and best practices.

Cloud & Platform Engineering

  • Deploy, support, and operate services within AWS and/or Azure environments.
  • Automate platform provisioning through Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Work with cloud networking concepts and secure service integrations.
  • Support engineering platforms used across security and data-focused teams.

DevOps & SRE

  • Build, maintain, and optimise CI/CD pipelines.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, logging, and observability solutions.
  • Troubleshoot production incidents and contribute to operational support activities.
  • Continuously improve service reliability, security, scalability, and performance.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong software engineering background with significant hands-on development experience.
  • Proven experience building production systems using Go, Python, Java, or C#.
  • Experience designing and building APIs, microservices, and Back End services.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience with automated testing approaches including TDD, BDD, unit testing, and integration testing.
  • Experience working with AWS and/or Azure cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of Terraform and Infrastructure as Code methodologies.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and supporting production environments.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Kong API Gateway.
  • Exposure to Cyber Security engineering environments.
  • Knowledge of Databricks, Spark, or Data Lake technologies.
  • Experience supporting Data Engineering platforms.
  • Understanding of API security concepts including OAuth2, JWT, and mTLS.
  • Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and observability practices.
