Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A client with Kforce is seeking a Software Engineer II to join their team in NYC.
Summary:
We are seeking a proactive, self-directed full-stack Software Engineer to design, build, test, and maintain the next generation of Fraud Prevention & Security systems in the cloud. This is a hands-on engineering role with ownership of well-scoped features across the full software development lifecycle. The ideal candidate reads and digests design documentation quickly, leverages available resources to find solutions independently, effectively utilizes AI coding tools in their development workflow and communicates status and blockers clearly to the team and partners.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in the design, development, test automation, documentation, and integration of next-generation Fraud Prevention & Security systems in the cloud
- Spend roughly 80% of time hands-on coding - writing new code, modifying existing code, and building test automation
- Design, develop, and maintain full-stack software, including backend services and customer-facing frontend experiences - covering enhancements, bug fixes, and proofs of concept
- Gather functional requirements, develop technical specifications, and perform project and test planning for well-scoped features
- Own assigned features end-to-end: design, development, deployment, validation, and post-launch iteration, verifying outcomes with evidence and peer input
- Implement a full SDLC lifecycle, including CI/CD in the cloud, with attention to observability, reliability, and maintainability
- Write modular, efficient, well-tested code using the appropriate mix of unit, integration, end-to-end, performance, and security tests
- Use logs, telemetry, and data trends to reason through issues and apply structured debugging
- Work as part of an agile development team, participating in team rituals and contributing to shared velocity and predictability
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and contributing to backend services (SWE2 level)
- Proficiency in a server-side language, especially Java (our primary stack); Python or Node.js also valuable
- Solid experience with RESTful API design and building/maintaining API integrations
- Experience with database technologies (relational and/or NoSQL)
- Experience with a server framework such as Spring MVC (preferred), Express, or Django
- Hands-on experience contributing to a production service - production-quality code and tests, deployment, and on-call
- Proficiency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.) and the judgment to use them effectively while validating their output
- Solid grasp of Agile development, object-oriented design, and engineering best practices
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, policy, and analytics partners
- Eagerness to learn and adapt in a dynamic, fast-moving environment
Preferred:
- Familiarity with business rules engines (e.g., Drools) - authoring and debugging rule sets, ideally with AI assistance
- Experience turning fraud/risk policy into rule logic, or working with risk decisioning, case-disposition, or trust & safety systems
- Experience contributing to backend services at scale (design, reliability, performance)
- Exposure to formal release and change-management processes and to observability/monitoring tooling
- Interest in fraud prevention, trust & safety, or risk systems
