Quick Overview
Job Description
About The Team
Listing squad — Buyer Experience group, Consider & Purchase initiative. We're a team of 11: eight engineers (six web, two iOS), a product manager, a product designer, and an engineering manager, with support from Etsy's wider iOS engineering community. The squad owns Etsy's buyer-facing listing experience end to end — the listing page on desktop, mobile web, and iOS, plus the personalization, customization, and variations flows buyers use to configure made-to-order items — and is currently rebuilding it as a modular system that adapts to the item being sold and the buyer viewing it.
About The Role
This contractor will join Etsy's Listing squad as an embedded iOS engineer, covering an engineer on parental leave. They will build and ship features on the Etsy iOS app's listing screen — one of the highest-traffic surfaces in the buyer journey — working in Swift and SwiftUI within an established codebase, on work scoped and prioritized by the squad.
Feature development
- Implement well-scoped features on the iOS listing screen from PRDs and Figma specs provided by the squad's product manager and designer.
- Contribute to the squad's Adaptive Listing Page work on iOS, including item-type-aware treatments and personalization, customization, and variations (PCV) selection flows.
- Implement listing-screen changes required by regulatory and compliance programs, including sustainability and warranty disclosures and reviews privacy requirements.
- Build new listing-screen sections in SwiftUI following the squad's documented section-creation pattern, and migrate legacy UIKit and Objective-C modules to SwiftUI as feature work touches them.
- Work with backend engineers on listing API changes needed to support client features, with support from the squad's senior engineers.
Experimentation
- Build control and treatment paths behind configuration flags, and set up experiments in Etsy's experimentation platform.
- Instrument analytics events for new features and validate that events fire correctly before launch.
- Run structured QA passes ("tirekicks") across device, OS version, and locale combinations ahead of each experiment launch.
- Ramp experiments up or down under the direction of the squad, and remove flags and dead code branches once an experiment concludes.
Quality and production support
- Fix bugs and crashes reported on the listing screen through Etsy's error-monitoring and alerting tools.
- Participate in release-candidate testing for the weekly iOS app release, including verifying backwards compatibility with older app versions still in the field.
- Help investigate listing-screen performance regressions introduced by squad work.
Collaboration
- Participate in the squad's daily standup, sprint planning, and scoping sessions.
- Review pull requests from squad members and respond to review requests on the listing screen from other Etsy teams.
- Post experiment plans and results in Etsy's cross-team listing-surface channels so parallel work on the same surface stays coordinated.
- Keep work documented and current in the squad's Jira project.
This is a fixed-term engagement covering a leave period. The contractor will report to the squad's engineering manager and is not expected to set technical direction for the listing screen or represent the squad in cross-organizational architecture forums.
Requirements
Must-Haves
- Swift — 2+ years building production iOS applications in Swift, with the ability to take well-scoped features from PRD and Figma spec to shipped code.
No certifications are required for this role.
Nice-to-Haves
- SwiftUI — Experience building production SwiftUI views, including embedding SwiftUI within existing UIKit view hierarchies.
- UIKit — Working familiarity with UIKit, particularly UICollectionView-based screens, sufficient to modify and incrementally migrate legacy view code.
- Objective-C reading fluency, for navigating legacy areas of the codebase.
- Experience with A/B experiments, including feature flags, ramping, and post-experiment code cleanup.
- Analytics instrumentation and event validation.
- Experience in a large, modular iOS codebase shipping on a weekly release train, where backwards compatibility with older app versions matters.
