Job Description

On behalf of the MOD, we are looking for a Engineering Manager (Inside IR35) for a contract which is running to the end of March 2027 possible extension and is a hybrid role so does require up to 3 days a week in the Bristol location with occasional travel to Bath as part of the role

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.

The role is responsible for leading a team of civil servants and managing contractor relationships to ensure the effective delivery of support to maritime operations. Key functions include budget oversight, contract compliance, and adapting agreements to meet changing requirements.

The role involves prioritising and triaging work to align with contract scope, providing subject matter expertise for reliability-centred maintenance discussions, and fostering collaborative relationships with contractors. It also requires cross-departmental coordination to ensure commercial and financial compliance, alongside proactive risk management for contracts and team resourcing.

Continuous management of contracts, budgets, and team resourcing to ensure alignment with maritime operational needs.

Responsible for the effective management and oversight of key operational and contractual functions, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and maritime needs.

SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

As a Engineering Manager, your main responsibilities will be:

* Budget Management: Overseeing and controlling financial resources to ensure efficient allocation and adherence to budgetary constraints.
* Contractor Management: Supervising contractor performance, ensuring deliverables meet agreed standards, and addressing any issues that arise.
* Work Triage and Contract Scope Alignment: Assessing and prioritising incoming tasks to determine their fit within the existing contract scope, ensuring efficient resource utilisation.
* Contractor Liaison and Relationship Building: Fostering strong, collaborative relationships with contractors to maintain effective communication and partnership.
* Contract Updates and Adaptations: Implementing updates and changes to contracts to address evolving maritime requirements and operational priorities.
* Subject Matter Expertise (SME) Support: Providing expert input for discussions on Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) to enhance operational efficiency and asset reliability.
* Cross-Department Collaboration: Working closely with other departments to ensure compliance with commercial and financial regulations and policies.
* Routine Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks related to the contract and team resourcing to ensure continuity and operational effectiveness.
* Leadership of Civil Servant Staff: Providing leadership, guidance, and support to civil servant team members, fostering a positive and productive working environment while ensuring professional development and performance management.

Essential Skills

* Extensive experience as an engineering manager which will include the MOD either directly or through another supplier
* Leadership and Team Management: Proven ability to lead and develop a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
* Contract Management: Strong understanding of contract frameworks, compliance, and the ability to manage updates and renewals effectively.
* Budget Management: Competence in financial oversight, ensuring efficient allocation and adherence to budgetary constraints.
* Risk Management: Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to contracts, resources, and operations.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to liaise with contractors, internal departments, and decision-making panels.
* Work Prioritisation and Organisation: Strong organisational skills to triage and prioritise tasks within contract scope and operational requirements.
* Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across departments to ensure compliance with commercial and financial policies.
* Strategic Planning: Skills in planning and executing long-term processes, such as contract renewals and market approaches.

Desirable Skills

* Familiarity with RCM principles and their application in operational discussions to enhance asset reliability.
