Senior Product Manager (Lending) - Engine by Starling
Quick Overview
Job Description
At Engine by Starling, we are on a mission to find and work with leading banks all around the world who have the ambition to build rapid growth businesses, on our technology.
Engine is Starling's software-as-a-service (SaaS) business, the technology that was built to power Starling, and two years ago we split out as a separate business.
Starling has seen exceptional growth and success, and a large part of that is down to the fact that we have built our own modern technology from the ground up. This SaaS technology platform is now available to banks and financial institutions all around the world, enabling them to benefit from the innovative digital features, and efficient back-office processes that has helped achieve Starling's success.
We draw upon our experience as knowledgeable bankers, and best in class technologists to become the chosen option for these banks, and preferred partners for leading consultancies.
Hybrid Working
We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Engine - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person.
About the role
We’re looking for a Senior Product Manager to join our Lending team. At Engine, our Lending domain covers our platform’s existing and new lending products such as overdrafts, unsecured loans, mortgages and credit cards, as well as cross-cutting lending capabilities such as origination and collections.
This role is pivotal within Engine’s Product & Technology function, in making sure we understand the client needs and build the right products.
We’re looking for an experienced product manager with experience in either 0-1 build or significant enhancements of lending products. Experience with mortgages or secured term lending in particular is helpful but not essential. Demonstrable track record of developing high quality products that enable business growth is essential.
You’ll work closely with the Business Development, Customer Success and Engineering functions to design solutions that meet client needs and drive our product strategy.
You’ll enjoy problem solving, getting to the detail, and understanding how clients can make the best use of our product, whilst designing ways to improve it. Your work will span product strategy, client-facing requirements gathering & solution design, and product ownership in an Engineering context. You’ll have a technical mindset and enjoy working collaboratively with Engineering leadership to build scalable products for different market contexts.
What you’ll get to do
- Take ownership of a best-in-class lending product by scoping out breakthrough features, and owning the end-to-end delivery of your sub-domain(s) in close alignment with the Product and Engineering domain leaders.
- Own the Roadmap, vision and strategy for your sub-domain, contributing to the overall lending roadmap
- You’ll work cross-functionally with engineers, designers, document writers, and QA to drive the design and delivery of improvements to the product that align with the vision of the business, taking into account existing and potential clients.
- You’ll confidently and independently prioritise incoming tasks and clearly communicate ‘the what’ and ‘the why’ of each decision to both internal and external stakeholders.
- You’ll manage deadlines and be responsible for proactively raising delivery risks that may impact our client projects.
- You’ll develop a close relationship with our Delivery and Customer Success teams, taking the lead on assessing feature requests and client requirements as a key input into overall feature and roadmap definition.
- You’ll work closely with our Business Development team by helping the team understand Engine’s capabilities in your domain and joining early-stage Sales conversations as an SME.
- You will be responsible for being the champion of the feature, telling different teams and clients about the product, and adapting your style of communication and materials to different stakeholders
- You’ll manage difficult conversations with senior stakeholders both internally and externally, balancing strategic direction and pragmatic decision making.
- Proven product experience: You have been a Product Manager or Product Owner with demonstrated experience building and shipping complex and impactful products
- Lending product track record: You’ve built or significantly improved lending products before and are excited to own an ambitious sub-domain within Engine’s lending.
- Eager Learner: You have an appetite for learning, listening, and growing within an organisation that is constantly expanding
- FinTech/Banking Exposure: Prior experience or a strong baseline understanding of FinTech, or a regulated banking/lending environment.
- Technical Foundation: A product or engineering background, technical experience, or deep technical curiosity.
- Clear Communication & Stakeholder Management: You can clearly explain the "what", "how", and "why" behind the product backlog to your engineering and design triad, and you navigate risks and tradeoffs excellently. You’re comfortable presenting in front of clients and can work closely with Client Success to manage expectations.
- Ways of working and leadership: You use your PM experience to contribute to team-wide improvements to ways of working and product process. It would be nice to have experience managing or coaching other PMs, but this is not essential.
