About the Role

This is a hands-on developer position working in the cloud - internally referred to as a "Cloud Dev" role. This is not a leadership-only or purely architectural position. Even candidates with a Lead or Architect title must still be actively writing code on a daily basis.

Client is undergoing an AWS migration from on-prem to cloud. New development is being done in Python, with legacy systems in Java.

Required Qualifications

• 15+ years of hands-on AWS cloud engineering experience (14+ years minimum considered)
• Strong, hands-on experience with:
  • AWS (recent, hands-on experience strongly preferred over Azure)
  • Lambda (must-have - critical to this role)
  • Terraform / Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Step Functions
  • Kafka
  • API Development
  • CloudWatch
  • System Design
• Python - 5+ years minimum, the more the better
• Prior Java experience (former Java developer background strongly preferred)
• AWS certification preferred: Solutions Architect Professional or DevOps Engineer Professional
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Strategic thinker - must be able to think beyond just writing code
• Strong, consistent communication skills and ability to follow through
• Minimum 10 years working in the USA

What Makes a Strong Candidate

• Genuine, current hands-on developers - not candidates who have moved fully into management or pure architecture without coding
• Very senior-level developers (many hires have 15+ years experience; occasionally a strong 10-year developer is considered)
• Candidates should be prepared to speak in-depth about their AWS/cloud architecture decisions and hands-on implementation work
• This role prioritizes quality over rate - talent and depth of hands-on experience matter more than cost

Important Notes for Recruiters/Submitters

• Do not submit candidates who are hands-off leads/architects - they are consistently screened out
• Confirm hands-on coding involvement with the candidate before submitting; some candidates are surprised to learn this is a coding-heavy role
• Recent AWS experience is preferred over Azure background
