Senior Backend Engineer, Telematics Platform
Work Arrangement: Hybrid, 3-4 days per week in office
Education Required: Bachelor's Degree
Experience Required: 7+ years in IT, including 5+ years of software development experience
Position Overview
This Senior Backend Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and operating high-throughput backend systems that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of telematics data from connected vehicle fleets.
The role sits at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, cloud development, and API development, delivering reliable, low-latency services that support fleet intelligence products for commercial and enterprise customers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that process and expose telematics data, including GPS, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry.
  • Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines that ingest high-volume vehicle event streams from technologies such as Pub/Sub and Kafka into data warehouses and operational data stores.
  • Architect and optimize data access across:
    • PostgreSQL / Cloud SQL
    • BigQuery
    • Redis
    • Bigtable
  • Work with data engineers and analysts to design stored procedures, views, and query patterns that support strict latency and throughput SLAs.
  • Develop data aggregation, transformation, and enrichment logic, including:
    • Time-series rollups
    • Geospatial calculations
    • Unit conversions
    • Time-zone conversions
  • Build and enforce data contracts and schema evolution strategies to maintain backward compatibility across upstream producers and downstream API consumers.
  • Integrate backend services with cloud-native infrastructure, including event-driven architectures, scheduled jobs, serverless functions, and Kubernetes/GKE.
  • Implement observability through structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics.
  • Participate in on-call rotations supporting availability and reliability targets.
  • Apply security best practices including authorization scoping, secrets management, and data privacy controls.
  • Partner with product, data science, and platform teams in an Agile delivery model.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, and architectural decisions.

Hands-on experience deploying and managing services within Google Cloud Platform, including:

Big Data
Experience working with large-scale data processing technologies such as:
  • Apache Spark
  • Dataflow

Artificial Intelligence / Expert Systems
Experience developing or integrating AI/ML models and/or rule-based expert systems.
Examples may include:
  • Vertex AI

API Development
Strong experience designing, building, and consuming:
  • RESTful APIs
  • gRPC APIs
  • OAuth 2.0 authentication

Required Experience
  • 7+ years of overall IT experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Practical experience in at least 2 coding languages, or advanced expertise in 1 language.
  • Senior-level engineering experience with the ability to provide technical guidance.
