Controller

Our client, a public higher education institution, is seeking a Controller to join their team. As a Controller, you will be part of the Finance and Accounting department, supporting the accounting teams. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, a detail-driven mindset, and the ability to lead cross-functional collaboration—aligning successfully in a mission-focused environment.

Job Title: Controller

Location: On-site in Norfolk, VA (with the client)

What's the Job?

• Manage the overall accounting department, including cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, leases, accounts payable, and grants accounting.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable accounting principles.
• Lead monthly close procedures and oversee the teams responsible for core accounting functions.
• Conduct thorough financial analysis to support business decisions, identify trends, and provide actionable insights.
• Oversee financial reporting for stakeholders and auditors, including preparation of required reports.

What's Needed?

• Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in an accounting role.
• Proven experience in corporate accounting or a similar role, demonstrating expertise in financial analysis and reporting.
• Excellent understanding of debits, credits, and balance sheet reconciliation processes.
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail; ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
